have a 2019 MacBook Pro (16-inch) running macOS Big Sur

Processer 2.3 ghz 8-Core intel Core i9

Memory 16 GB 26667 MHz DDR4

Startup Disk Macintosh HD

Graphics AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4 GB

Storage 342.89 GB available of 1TB

(After deleting currently not used software, etc.)

TIME MACHINE 527.84 GB available of 6TB

I have purged the 1TB Startup Disk several times and can not add any further storage due to the soldered HDD. So, I am thinking of purchasing a second 10TB HDD and installing new software into that drive (10GB). The only problem is how does that affect the TIME MACHINE backups? Could I purchase another 10TB HDD and partition that as a TIME MACHINE and have software installed on the second 10TB HDD into that TM?

I hope that I am making sense. If not, can you suggest how I could achieve this, please?

Thank you.

Thank you for replying to my question. Just one point I am still unclear about. On a Windows PC, you can install software easy to an external drive e.g. (d) instead of (c). But on a Mac how do you achieve the same. Then your solution for TM would work as far as I gather.

What software are you trying to install? Because most applications for macOS can be dragged & dropped (copied) from the dmg wherever you like. The ones that come in an installable pkg, usually allow you the change the destination of the install.

Many thanks for this suggestion. Sounds quite feasible coupled up with the alternative TM on a second external HDD drive.
