How to stop the Hard Drive from spining?

Yeah, right, an easy one but nothing seem to work.

I have my Powerbook under Jaguar and the hard drive never stop spining. In the Energy Saver control panel the option "Put the hard drive to sleep when possible" is checked but I can have that computer running all night long and the hard drive will be spinning too.

I'm very concern because of the life of the hard drive.
No matter if the Power Adapter in connected or not, looks like the unit just doesn't care or Jaguar doesn't work.

Under OS9 the HD stops (of course, it is a superior OS).

What can I do?

I had the same problem with my CRT iMac. No matter what, the drive would not spin down. I even tried setting a spin down time via the terminal, with no effect. And of course, OS 9 would do it. What I eventually ended up doing was reformatting and reinstalling, and the problem went away. I don't know if you want to go to that extreme, but it worked for me.

My OS 10.2 installation seems to have problems with the "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible" option. When selected, the disk will spin down based on the timer for Display Sleep, but the disk spins down just in time for a disk write to occur and then spins up again. I had to stop using both Display Sleep and the Disk Sleep option, instead letting the main Computer Sleep timer control all the devices.

The starting of the drive is what shortens their lifespan. That is when the motor draws the most power and is under the highest load. Having a drive that stops and starts repeatedly will die much quicker then one that was left running.
