How to stop this?

iPhone 8 on iOS 11.1, but also happened in iOS 10 with my old SE.

See that slider in the bottom? Doesn't respond when I try to slide it to the left, never has.

Super irritating to have to hit open with safari every single time.

EDIT: This is in the dedicated Gmail app.

Have you tried going to Settings in the Gmail app and then to the Google Apps section and checking/changing the settings there?
