I am happy with my apple tv the way it is

I'm not interested in renting movies ( when and if it comes to the uk ), the new look menu system, viewing web stored photos or downloading podcasts directly.

Can I stop the download.

My understanding is that the AppleTV checks periodically for updates and will download and install the update without asking ?

I should be able to block the AppleTV IP address from accessing the internet through my router, is this my only option ?

Thanks.

You can change preferences in iTunes I believe to stop checking or downloading updates automatically.

Their is a check for updates automatically tick box, in the general tab within itunes, but this is for itunes updates, or that is my interpretation.

I blocked the apple tv ip from accessing the internet. I don't want the kids viewing the movie trailers anyway.

Their should be a way of turning movie trailers of, similar to turning youtube off.

For me, the new appletv update would drastically reduce the functionality of the device. I am not interested in purchasing content from itunes.

The current interface is simple and intuitive for accessing itunes library content, the new interface appears to be very much tailored into accessing the itunes store and content stored on the AppleTV hard drive.

I like being able to set my source and that is what is shown under each media type, I don't want to have to navigate to shared sources each time I access content, which is my impression of the way the new menu system will work ?

On your Mac, go to the Terminal and, if not already, connect to your Apple TV:-

ssh -1 frontrow@AppleTV.local

Enter your password as "frontrow" if prompted. Then type:

sudo bash -c 'echo "127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com" >> ../../etc/hosts'

And press return. This will stop future updates.

This only works if AppleTV is already hacked.

it isn't hacked, but I've blocked the appletv IP address from accessing the internet and that's fixed it, no more updates and no unsuitable movie trailers for the kids. :)

When there was an update over the summer, I remember AppleTV asking me whether I wanted to update.

Correct, the Apple TV will not apply an update without your consent. It will automatically detect that there is an update however and prompt you.

Can't you set the parental controls to show "G" content only? I assume this will restrict all content with ratings applied (which, I think all trailers have).

Yes, you can restrict movies and TV shows. Trailers currently are approved for all audiences (i.e. green trailers) so those would not be restricted.
