How to stream non mp4 video from snow leopard to apple tv 2

How to stream non-mp4 videos to atv2:
(Please note none of the programs listed are mine, I only use them and am assembling this guide so others can easily stream videos to the ATV2. I take no responsibility for anything.)
What this program does it transcodes the video into mp4 (using VLC) and streams it at the same time. This is why you computer fan will turn on while playing it.

Requirements:
Mac OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Apple TV Generation 2 (ATV2)

You need 2 programs:

Airflick (download it from: http://ericasadun.com/ftp/AirPlay/ , please note that it could get upgraded to fix some bugs so I would recommend checking for new versions)

VLC (download it from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ , please note it must be located in your Applications folder)

Now all you have to do is open Airflick, select your AppleTV, drag in the video you want to send to it and press play. It should take a few seconds (10-30 seconds) as it starts to transcode it before it streams and then you should be good. If you are having trouble try pressing menu on the ATV2 until you get to the main menu then try streaming.

Hi. Thanks for the headsup! I've been waiting for something like this to show up before I jump into the water and get an ATV.

Have you tried this with mkv files? Does it support subtitles? Do you have any control on the transcoding settings?

I found this works a lot better with AirVideo server doing the transcoding rather than VLC. VLC transcoding results in a lot of green artifacting, while the quality of AirVideo is great.

AirFlick supports AirVideo, so it's all integrated. You can download AirVideo server here.

I had an earlier version of AirFlick, really a proof of concept. But just updated to the latest version and I noticed that Erica has been hard at work upgrading the software. Now AirVideo access is built in (another tremendous app, by the way). With my current set up any media accessible on my mac is easily viewed by on my Apple TV2.
