My late 2012 iMac is on 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion). I want to get a new iPhone, but it requires me to run Yosemite at minimum to sync with iTunes.

I already have Yosemite on partition. So all I have to do is to copy iTunes media folder from my 10.8.5 boot drive to iTunes folder in Yosemite partition. And then from that Yosemite partition, I will be able to transfer music to my new iPhone

However.... I am very obsessed with iTunes play counts as I feel emotional attachment towards them somehow... And I want to keep 10.8.5 as my main drive.

Is there any way to copy only the play count data from Yosemite to Mountain Lion? Maybe a small file that stores play counts? I don't want to copy the entire iTunes media folder back and forth between partitions every time I want to update play count...

Thanks in advance.

Well. the iTunes .it file is your library. You could have done this, but for future:

In the iTunes package, in /Applications folder right click "Show package contents" and search by this under "contents":

"03.Playlist.DatesPlayed"

You'll find several, but they are the same file, just in different languages... English one is the 3rd file along.

But since you have OS installed, you have lost this.

So, do I just have to copy this "03.Playlist.DatesPlayed" file back and forth to keep the play counts up to date on both partitions?

Also, what did you mean by "since you have OS installed, you have lost this"? I have this file on my iTunes.

No, you only have to copy the file over once to get the play count updated...

I miss-understood, I thought you only had one partition. if u have Yosemite and Mountain Lion on separate partitions, then back up the file on Mountain Lion.. Copy it into Yosemite, at the same location in the package. of iTunes.
