How to transport 27" iMac

I am a student and I plan on buying the HUGE 27" iMac. I have to move back and forth to home from the dorms for the next few years. It's only 2 or 3 times a semester that I would have to do that but I don't want to keep the HUGE box to pack it away in everytime. Are there 3rd party manufacturers that sell sleeves or flexible cases for packing the 27 incher?

Hopefully other people have run into this problem and found a solution. I realize a majority probably have it permanently set in their office though.

Let's take that into perspective. What's really "flexible" about moving and/or storing a 27" iMac on any regular basis, anyway?

The container is very safe, it's only as big as the computer (are you saying a 27" iMac is the size of a nuke?), and it's got wheels! What's not to love?

LOL! That's really cool. When I say flexible, I think about the sleeve that I have for my macbook. I can fold that and put it into a drawer. Or my guitar came with a sleeve with a strap.
I like to keep the amount of crap in my room to a minimum. I can't put the box under my bed because the beds in my dorm have shelves built into them. I have my own car so my parents can't just bring the box to me whenever.

That's a last resort. I used to use a blanket and pillows to cushion my monitor when I transported it. I got a nasty scratch accidentally that way. Don't know how, just happened during the car ride. I CANNOT have that happen to my 27" baby
 
The best answer, by far, is just keep the box. It's made specifically for it, it protects it well (except for some of the first batch), and you don't have to pay anything for it.
 
NO NOT THROW THE BOX AWAY ! .. even if you cant keep it in your room.. store it some where else ! maybe in couple of years when you r ready for an upgarde .. box will help a lot if you are shipping it to any one

Why not wait until after you graduate college/university before you buy something that large? There are SOOOO many ways something like that will be destroyed (or stolen) in the dorms. :(

I think you'd serve yourself much better by either staying with the computer you have or get a mini to tide you over.

Sorry to bring some reality into the deal, but you are bound to have something incredibly stupid happen to your 'baby' on the back-and-forths between home and college or within the dorms. It's just not worth it to have anything too expensive in a college-life situation. Until you live in your own place, any situation you share with others brings potential malaise to yourself and your belongings.

Just think, after a few years...you'll be able to buy the OLED 40" iMac!
 
I don't think we should be telling people what they should and shouldn't buy. As long as maclook feels it's right for him, then the best of luck.

I'm looking for a similar product for my 27 (that is, assuming I eventually get a fully working one!). Does anyone know of a similar product to the CaseAce available in the UK?

I agree BUT I need a powerful machine (3d rendering programs) and the quad cores only come in the 27" flavor. I wish the 21.5" was given more features and upgrade options. There are benefits to getting the 27" like doubling as a TV and luring females into my room :p. I feel like it will hold it's value for many years to come. I'll probably have a job and enough money to upgrade again when the OLED 16-core touchscreen 40" iMac with super magical mouse comes out
 
That's all well and good Maclook...but I'm afraid you are going to have a heck of a time keeping that computer pristine.

When you have roommates, you have people in your room who may or may not care for your belongings as much as they care for their own (and some don't even care for their own stuff). Add to that the inevitable visitors that are their friends (or even yours), and you have even less control over who is touching your stuff. LOL

Add to that, your already stated necessity of transporting it to and from school 3-4 times a semester and I can guarantee that something is going to happen. :(

If you absolutely need the 27" for your schooling, then go for it...but as for someone who has been there, done that with dorm life and college days...your brand new stuff does not stay new for long when you have roommates. That's why I suggested a 'beater' computer for during school...one that does the job, but isn't all that pretty and one you wouldn't mind if it got beer or some other fluid spilled into it.

Trust me...it's gonna happen. :mad:
 
Let's not go off topic by discussing whether he's entitled to own this computer. I've transported a 27" about 15 times in the car so far, and I'm a student. It can be, and needs to be done by some people.

There's no reason why this computer shouldn't transported safely with the proper equipment, the only likely danger should be getting it in and out of the case.

I agree the box is useless for carrying it around - only one handle and it's pretty flimsy cardboard. I'm considering getting something like a cheap trolley suitcase and cutting some foam to fit, although I can see that taking up more space than is necessary. On the bright side though, should cost less than £30. Any thoughts?

p.s. (let's not assume students are irresponsible with expensive equipment. I'm sure maclook is grown-up enough to decide who to let near his mac, or to take out accidental damage insurance if he thinks it's worth it.)

I hate to disagree with you , but in the US in a dorm situation, you share your dorm room with 1-3 other people. When you are not in your room...those other people are in contact with your equipment...whether you want them to be or not. I don't know how you can keep others from touching your iMac in the UK, but here in the US...I cannot imagine being confident that my roommates were going to be as careful with my belongings as I am.

It doesn't matter if maclook is grown-up or not...it's his roommates that are the big question mark in the equation.

If maclook has a room to himself he can guarantee that his computer will only be touched by him (of course a burglary can occur...so that insurance you mentioned is a good idea), but in a dorm situation where you share space with others, you absolutely cannot guarantee that no one will touch his stuff.

I'm glad for you Breezy2000uk that you haven't had any damage in the 15 trips you had made but surely you can see my point that when you leave your equipment in the hands of others you really can't be sure what will happen.
 
the iMac 27 was never designed to be a portable device !or did i miss the handle ? so why would anybody carry this huge screen around when a macbookpro 17" does the job too and is portable :confused:
