How to "turn off" second monitor

I have two monitors connected to my nMP, an ATD and an ACD. Everything is great, except when I watch a movie using VLC. I full screen the movie, and the other monitor is still on. I can turn down the brightness to the absolute minimum, but it is still on, and in an otherwise dark room it is annoying.

Is there a way I black out the other monitor entirely, without unplugging it from the nMP?

SwitchResX has an option for disabling, but I haven't had much luck since 10.8. Not aware of a way to do this in OSX anymore...

With my old iMac, I commonly disconnected the second monitor when not in use since the video card would burn 20-30 extra watts just having a second monitor attached. So my crappy workaround was to use a USB extender cable to power my mDP -> duallink DVI converter. By disconnecting the usb, the iMac wouldn't see the monitor anymore, and the monitor would go into sleep mode without any signal. You could probably do the same thing if you're using a converter with your ACD.

VLC Preferences. Go to the Video page. Select "Black screens in Fullscreen mode". Restart VLC to activate the change.

I tried the VLC setting, but it has no effect on the second monitor...
