How to update

Hi, I have an iPhone 6 on 8.3. If I make an encrypted backup, then instal iOS 9.3.1 through itunes and then restore that backup to the phone, will i get my spotify music back? Or will I need to re-downlad all my music?

Why do you want to restore a backup if you can just update? I think you'll keep your music either way but I'm not entirely sure.

If you update without any issues that may be unnecessary, and even if you do you can still restore afterwards.

You might save some hassle by just updating. Either way it's up to you.

Upgrade first & see how it is over the course of 72 hours. If it sucks then do a full wipe & restore but otherwise it's just a waste of time*.

Just upgrade. If you did have issues you would restore them right back onto your device. You either upgrade and manually build up again or upgrade as usual. I have been upgrading since the original iPhone and been fine. A few times I have restored over the years for repair but not for the purpose of getting to a new OS level.

One more thing.. Do you think iOS 9.3.1 is good enough? In the first versions of iOS 9 everyone was complaining about stutters and lag. My phone is super fast on iOS 8.3, I don't want to loose that.

It's fine, but if you are happy with 8.3 and you aren't sure, then just stay with that and avoid the worrying (even if it might be unnecessary).

Well, about your Spotify music, I would assume you will download all of them altogether if you do a restore. Chances are: if developers don't set their app contents to be saved into "Documents" folder, then there is a very high chance app data will be removed if you do a restore. Backup would not help.
