Can someone post step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion? Mainly for the ones who have or will be getting a Mac soon and don't know how to run the upgrade.

If you will be buying a Mac soon, there's a good chance it may come with Mountain Lion already installed.

I am thinking about getting it this upcoming Thursday. Do you think it would have Mountain Lion already installed?

Yeah I have read that also. But after downloading it from the Mac App Store, what do you do? Does it automatically start the installer after you buy it from the MAS?

It's pretty clear... and simple.
Step 3:
Download OS X Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store.
Open the Mac App Store from your Dock to buy and download Mountain Lion. Then follow the onscreen instructions to install it. If you don’t have broadband access, you can visit any Apple Retail Store to get help with downloading.

Yes, the installer starts automatically. You will be prompted along the way. It is quite easy.

It depends. Are you planning on buying a Mac from the Apple Store? It doesn't hurt to ask the store rep.

Yes, I would be buying from an Apple Retail Store. They were very vague with the answer and said they were not sure when the new stock would have Mountain Lion installed on it.

In that case, let's assume it's not installed. It's quite simple. When you buy the machine, you can visit this page:

Mac OS X Up To Date

This page has 2 main choices:
  1. computers purchased between June 11 and July 25
  2. computers purchased after July 25 that do not have Mountain Lion installed

Simply click on the 2nd choice and then enter your information. In fact, you can do this from any computer and the Apple Store rep should be able to help you get that information submitted before you go home. Hopefully within a couple days (at most), you should have your code and you can redeem that code in the Mac AppStore (follow the instructions that GGJstudios has posted).

The installer starts automatically after the download but you have to initialise the install process first (I cancelled it because I was at 10% battery by the time it had finished downloading)

But as people have stated in this thread, a new Mac -SHOULD- come pre loaded with Mountain Lion :)

How do I initialize the install process?

Don't sweat this my friend. After the download the installer will popup and you just click continue like in my screen cap. Then it will confirm you want to install to Macintosh HD (you do), then one more click and you are off to the races. Trust us, you will not have a problem understanding what to do. :)

Why don't you search YouTube? It's very very likely someone had posted video on how to upgrade to ML.
