How to Use an MBA to an External Projector

The question is not physical connections, but how to turn on output to the external projector?

The wife has a Powerpoint presentation (Office Mac 2008) and may need to drag along my Gen 1 MBA.

I've never done (neither has she) a presentation on a Mac.

I was looking to keep the presenter tools on the desktop (The mode that shows the notes and slides) and have the slide show up on the external projector.

Do I need to hit a key combination or turn on something in preferences to get the video to the external projector?

The projector is auto detected once connected to the cable and the resolution is automatically adjusted to meet the projector capabilities, so no need for (F5)s or similar key combinations as in windows machines. I have experienced this with 4-5 different projector models (makes) over the last months.

No, it's all in full-auto mode.
Plug in the cable, the Mac handles it for you.

(been hooking up to external monitor at home & projector in classroom presentations)

For additional control you can go into "System Preferences" -> "Display" and choose between screen resolution, rotation and whether or not you like to have your screen mirrored or extended. In your case you want it to be extended so you can have one screen for your presentation control. In extended mode you also can choose the positioning of the displays towards each other by just dragging them around and you can choose your main screen, the one which will contain your menu bar and dock, by dragging the small white simulated menu bar between the two screens.

CMD + F1 or F2 (the brightness keys) forces display detection and mirror/extended modes on any modern mac
