How to use Apple Earphones with Remote with Spotify

Hello,

I am often using the Apple earphones when I listen to music using Spotify on my Mac. When using the remote on the cord of the headphones (play, pause, next and skip), iTunes will open. Is there any way to have this working with Spotify, or any third party apps actually.

Play, pause etc. keys on the keyboard works fine but I am used to using the remote on the earphones so it would be nice if this worked.
