Anyone have thoughts on how to value buying (or selling) a used MacPro 7,1 at this point in time? With the extreme likelihood that they are going to be made more or less obsolete once the (predicted) Apple Silicon ones are released, how can one determine a fair price to buy (or sell at)?

Apple is giving up on Intel chips, so any large/new purchase of an intel version seems risky - but how much should that affect the slightly used market? Need one soon, don't want to buy it new (seems crazy at this point), and there seems to be a steady stream of barely used ones coming onto the market, but those used prices seem high to me - Macs generally hold their value pretty well, but with Intel being abandoned not sure the same 'depreciation' schedule can be used.

I don't want to be they guy that hits up sellers with ridiculous low-ball offers, nor do I want to end up holding the (expensive) bag when the music does stop.

Until Apple announce what 'upgrade' options will be in the ASmp and mpMini, the 7.1 macpro has it's own user-base, those requiring tons of ram/internal storage/fast and multiple gpu's.

It is still early days to know what to expect.

If you need the high spec, a 7.1 is ideal, and the price is what it is.

Personally I would only buy new or from Apple refurb.

The essence of this question is to gauge psychological perceived value against economical value. To better understand this game of manipulation is to look up used airplane prices And compare those to used car prices. In short, prices do very seldom reflect actual value. Why do people buy a 30 year old Cessna for 300K without a blink?
To catch the best moment for a 7.1, you will Need to wait till the new Apple silicon hits the market. You want to shoot for the type of owner that buys into that manipulated game, and thinks he/she needs the newest stuff no matter what.
Those are enthusiasts and semi-pros that never needed that equipment in the first place. My estimate will be prices compared to the current iMac Pro’s on eBay that are around 30 - 40% depreciated already. You will see 7.1 base models for around 4K, once Apple silicon hits the shelves. So this means for you, keep that powder dry, wait about six month and then be happy for the next decade. That’s at least my game plan

Just keep the Mac Pro and sell a pic of the case as Heavy Metal Sculpture for $12m as an NFT (or $29m if you do something really creative like use a photoshop filter on pic first).
