How TO: visual voice mail?

can anyone explain how this works? who will be able to take a video of themselves and send it to the phone? like anyone with a webcam and a computer on cingulars website? or does it have to be phone to phone?

what phone is capable of doing video recording in the visual voice mail format?

how can you leave a video of yourself if the iphone has no front facing camera?

not related but can you even make a video call to anyone else with the iphone? any phone with a front facing camera + 3G can call another phone that is video capable and start a video conference.

You're misunderstanding the concept...Visual Voicemail is a visual summary/list of your regular audio voicemails. So you can see who called and when. It's so you can skip past the five annoying Mother-in-law voicemails to the one left by the girl you're having an affair with.

Nothing to do with video.

I believe the pic will show with the VM if you have their number and picture in your contacts similar to pic caller id.

And yes, the visual vm is to show you a list of what numbers/contacts have left you messages so you can pick and choose what to listen to and not have to go through every message in your mailbox.

No, you have the ability to access any of your voicemails without going through the previous ones. Just like an email inbox where you can click on any of them to read them.

It's the next step in that same feature...you get a caller ID like listing, but instead of having to call your voicemail and skip ahead to heard the one you want to listen to, you can selectively listen to your voicemails. So it's a Mail-like app for voicemails (you even get a little blue dot if you haven't listened to the voicemail yet). Here is the Apple video of how it works.

i dont know if you can call that revolutionary,

on any PPC phone or even SMART phone, outlook syncs with pocket outlook onthe pda/phone, when your friend calls you, the phone will bring up the info of the caller if the phone number matches.

EX: 555-555-1234 calls me, that number matches John doe, the phone will then bring up

if the call is missed, the phone will then say you have a missed call from john doe, and will indicate if there was a VM left or not.

i just did a quick google and visual voice mail is not an iphone thing, its a provider feature, and you can get it on almost any phone

No, you're STILL misunderstanding the feature. Even after they call, you see you missed the call, and they left a voicemail, you STILL have to call into some automated system and listen to your messages in order, choosing to delete or save them in order, until you're done.

With visual voicemail, all your voicemails are RIGHT THERE, in a list, on the phone. You can pick and choose which one to listen to in whatever order you want. No calling in to some system, no password to type in, no punching numbers on a keypad to delete/save messages or anything like that. It's just there. I don't know how this can be explained any more clearly.

yeah i know what your saying, we have that at work, voice mails show up in outlook as an attachment with caller info. i guess thats cool,

but what about the video conferencing part, is there any indication the iphone can video conference or just do a simple video call?

No. It doesn't have a forward facing camera, and it doesn't have 3G support which would be required for this sort of thing on the go.

2) Operator: "Please Enter Your Password"

pr5owner is right, however, in that this is not an iPhone specific feature. Already exists for the blackberry and has since before the iPhone was announced. It's just not called "visual voicemail" and has the added bonus of being able to READ your voicemails as text instead of listening to them, so you acn see what someone had to say while sitting in a meeting or other similar situation.

actually in this thread im trying to understand why apple is pushing their "features" so hard when they arent even anything new (except multi touch, except multitouch isnt new, its just new for a mobile device)

also i dont troll, i have facts to back me up, and every statement ive made has had facts and numbers.

forums is the only place where people can learn quickly and possibly be smarter about their next purchase. for example, im in alot of car forums as well (im actaully in about 40-50 forums), almost every car forum has a HOW TO: section, these sections has saved me at LEAST 8000 because i just did the work myself as well as found online stores to buy car parts from. also i know a hellva lot more about my car than i ever did. i dont claim to be a car expert just be reading it, but i can do alot of work on my own.

same thing with electronics in general, not just phones, forums has taught me everything i know about WM5 and how to hack the crap out of it. also its taught me what electronics are good and what are not so good. debating about the iphone being good or not brings up all the good and bad points about the product so you know if it suits your needs. if visual voice mail isnt a propriatary apple thing, im hoping i can get it for my BB8700 and Tytn

i just want the best bang for the buck, i want my device to do anything and everything under the sun and be cheap at the same time (or cost effective, as i stated on HOFO, "i am actaully willing to shell out hundreds maybe even thousands for a QUALITY product")
