How Well Is Apple TV 2.0 Selling?

Hey, does anyone have solid sales figures on Apple TV units? I think Apple finally has a compelling product, and selection is getting darn close to where it needs to be in order to be respectable.

I expect Apple to have a lot better showing with Apple TV units now vs. with version 1, but does anyone know by how much?
 
Apple aren't likely to release sales figures anytime soon, but the interest seems to be there.

I bet its already surpassed Zune sales by now. Soon by a wider margin. :p

I'll only say Apple has an uphill struggle for adoption. No marketing. Even sales staff at Apple stores seem in the dark about Take Two. My local best buy told me "Apple TV is joke"...This could still be very disappointing for Apple.

I know of one Apple TV that Apple sold as a result of visits to the Apple Store - mine.

I know of two Apple TV's that Apple sold as a result of me buying mine. Both my brother and brother-in-law have purchased an Apple TV since seeing my in operation.

This is purely an example of a good product selling itself, and without much marketing by Apple.

Other than the iPod what product do you see Apple advertising very much?

Other than the " Mac vs PC " ad campaigns you really don't see much advertising. I think those Mac vs PC commercials are good. :D

I never saw the PowerMac/MacPro being marketed. It's amazing they've sold any of those! ;)

Did you ask that person why " Apple TV is joke "? I'd venture to say they know little about the product, but soon enough they will.

Best Buy, is just now beginning to get into selling Apple Product, so it doesn't surprise me to hear comments like that from their employees. I had one Best Buy employee tell me " Oh yeah, we sell Apple Computers but you cannot get them here. We had 3 on display somewhere over there ( he pointed to an area away from where computers were put on display )

It's gonna take some time for Apple to get Best Buy employees up to speed. I know an Apple employee who has the job of doing just that. He works for Apple but is currently at a Best Buy store in Maryland.
 
The fact that Best Buy employees ragged on the AppleTV amuses me. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have asked them questions and found them to be utterly devoid of any useful knowledge and quite often incompetent about even their own inventory levels.

Also, who are they to talk of quality? One out of every five DVD's I've purchased at Best Buy has defect of one kind or another. It's as if for their volume discounts they end up getting defective stock and just bank on the fact that maybe 6-7 out of 10 customers will not complain.

AppleTV does have its flaws... no product is absolutely perfect. But I would be surprised if Best Buy staff, or even their executives, could clearly point out specifically what those flaws are.

Did the Best Buy employees suggest anything in its place? I'm curious to know what they think is a good product.
 
They have advertised most products actually (outside of the pro line which i imagine is being it is for a very specific audience, but benefits from general computer advertising).

iPhone
iPod Touch
iPods
Macs
Air

All heavily advertised. They don't advertise some of the accessories as much, but I wouldn't call the Apple TV an accessory.

I am actually a big fan of the Apple TV and have 3 of them (also got one for my father). I wish they would advertise it and do something to suggest they are serious about it now.

Beyond the advertising what I find even more amazing is that there was no big post on their website when the apple tv rentals went live. That, along with the inconsistency of the movie browsing (hd list and other genre's are not in sync at all) makes it seem like they still look at this as a beta project.

A friend at work bought one after hearing about the macworld announcement and asking me some questions. He is a bit more it touch with technology than the average person and I think it will take more than word of mouth to get the average person on board.
 
Being the curious type... I've been looking at the sales ranking of the AppleTV on Amazon... and its definitely higher than before Take 2. (Last time I checked, the 160 gig model was in the top 200 products in Electronics, thats up from around #300).

Seems promising
 
bottom line, if it wasnt selling, apple would not continue to support it. Zo it must be doing well.
 
I am from Scotland and can tell you that here, I have yet to meet anyone ( other than from forums ) that know exactly what the product is. I had heard of it and seen it in the Apple store but was not interested, until the recent macworld and this forum.

I did not know I could use appletv as a streamer for my dvd content. This is what has sold me on buying one. Similarly the announcement of take 2 with the option to rent HD films convinced me to buy one. I have had mine about 3 weeks now and am glad I bought it but feel that Apple do not sell this product well compared to their other products. Certainly in the store it is always sitting on it's own and even when I bought it the staff didn't seem fussed compared to when I bought Leopard or my iphone anyway.

I don't know how well it does for Apple but I certainly hope they keep supporting it. Is there any chance of Apple giving up on it?
 
I have one on my list of things to buy this year, but first need to upgrade my tv to a widescreen. been putting it off since my sony wega works just fine, but can't hold back much longer :)
 
I can honestly say that I was one of the people that took no interest in Apple TV. But with the recent announcement, I took a plunge and am now a proud owner of Apple TV.

So their advertising worked on me! ;)
 
When Apple has a few thousand HD titles ready for renting, then it'll be worth the cost of advertising on TV. Until then, they'll rely on viral marketing by owners like us.

I just showed a friend today and he was wowed by it. My other friends love watching funny youtube stuff and some of the video podcasts.

I love this device, it is really cool.
 
best buy employees have about as much knowledge as a grade 3 who is high on nicotine. i remember overhearing one say: "the intel processors are faster than the amd processors but i would go for amd as the intel is too fast that then it slows the rest of your computer down. yeah, go for amd".
 
I think mouth to mouth marketing is doing a pretty good job. If I got a euro for every Apple product I helped selling I would be rich now:rolleyes:
Apple's userbase is very loyal and fanboyish, like me. But I always stay objective and compare Apple products to other products like the Zune, or the Zen and give objective points why an Apple product should fit one better then the competor.

Last I promoted the MacBook Pro's as a good solution for my school here in Holland. They bought over 30 thanks to my advice.
They also bought 4 airport extremes.
And 5 iMacs.
My friend got an iPod thanks to me.
Another got a MacBook Pro (Penryn).
My mothers friend has bought an iMac thanks to me.
My mother is going to buy an Apple TV when the price goes down like it has in the US.
My brother is buying one too for movies on his 37 incher.
Girlfriend bought an iPod thanks to me, and her sisters (3) too.

Can I get credit Apple:rolleyes:? Nah I just love your products and therefore promote them!

I was heading to the Birmingham (UK) store on Friday to pick a second one up and the motorway got snarled up. So, I called in at the wednesbury PC World, which has a dedicated Apple section, complete with an Apple Branded Employee. They were completely sold out of both 40 and 160 Apple TVs. Of course, I don't know how many they normally stock, but it must be selling quite well.
 
i have 2 in my house

a 160gb which we load with movies and take to the boat and cottage

and then a 40gb in my basement tv room
 
It's on my list of things to get this year. The Take 2 version definitely addressed a lot of the features I wanted ( HD media, surround sound) and the price is much better. I was pushing myself for the last 6 months to pay off my car before I bought anymore "toys" and I just finished a couple weeks ago. I'll probably wait a couple months then get the AppleTV.
