Can anyone make an educated guess as to how wide you think the bezel is around the iPad? I'm trying to get an idea of how much actual screen real estate there is on this thing.

The screen is 9.7 inches diagonally.

Height: 9.56 inches (242.8 mm)
Width: 7.47 inches (189.7 mm)
Depth: 0.5 inch (13.4 mm)

The case is 7.47" x 9.56".
The screen 768 x 1024 @132 Pixels/Inch
or 5.82" x 7.78". Assuming the screen is centered in the frame, the bezel is approximately .89" wide long way and .825" wide short way. The home button end may be wider, in which case I'd guess the other three sides are .825" wide.

Excellent!
Thank you so much!
