so apple is making a big deal about having the internet on a phone....but you need wi-fi for it to work....so doesn't that mean that 90% of my day when I'm driving around or not at home....I won't be able to use the net?

You'll pay Cingular/AT&T a bunch of money for EDGE data access, that's what you'll do. ;) EDGE is to GPRS as ISDN is to dialup: better but still not very fast. That's why so many people are complaining about the lack of 3G on the iPhone.

In the keynote, Steve Jobs said that the reason they weren't going with 3G on the iPhone is that it is not as widely available compared to EDGE. Still, the United States is very behind on cell phones comparitively to what's out there. They've had things similar to what the iPhone can do in Japan and China for years (internet browser, 5+ megapixel cameras on their phones, video chat, etc.). I think that is why the iPhone may not be such a huge hit in other countries just because the technology is not necessarily new to them.

My phone-loving buddies don't want an iPhone because of the lack of 3G. Seems silly not to include it when it's pretty much the standard for high-end outside of America. That said I haven't been following developments so I don't know if they've shoe-horned 3G into the iPhone yet...

Nothing precise has been said yet, but I'd be surprised if the first iPhone release over here isn't 3G.

3G on the 1st Gen iPhone would be nuts. I doubt they could pull that off with battery life the way it is now a days. Maybe by Macworld we could hear about an announcement so we can wait till July of next year.
