So I understand the new model is a step back from the 2012. But I'm running a late 2009 Mini for my media pc. It's still holding up but could be a bit snappier for some things. The specs are: 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM and I've upgraded the hard drive to a 7200rpm 640gb drive which helped quite a bit.

That depends entirely on what you're doing with it. If you're just surfing and checking email, it's not worth an upgrade to anything. If you're converting DSD 128 to PCM, it will be 3-5 times as fast.

Well, the late 2009 does struggle with graphics. It can only handle HD up to 720p, and when it comes to YouTube it doesn't perform well either.

Really?

I bought a cheapo PC from BestBuy around that time (2010) and it runs 1080p flawlessly from YouTube or avi or mkv or basically anything I throw at it.

Has an Athlon II X2 215 processor and on-board graphics.

My 2009 server did struggle with full screen video from youtube. Graphics and cpu were limiting. The IO was not an issue since i used raid 0 ssd.

I upgraded to a 2012 quad core when the 2014 line was announced, saved about 250 from new with applecare from a reseller before they were gone. the 5400 drive was horrible and purchased 16GB ram and ssd drives. the new one is at least 2-3x the speed as what i was used to for the last 5 years.

If basic media streaming and web browsing is your plan the 2014 line should be about 2x as fast as what you were used to. But I would recommend 8G ram minimal since you are locked into ram and go with either a fusion drive or all SSD the 5400 drive is better used as a time machine drive not a main drive.

How will the performance of the 2014 Mini compare to my late 2009?

Based on having on having had a 2.66 2009 8GB RAM 7200 WD HDD and now two 2012 quads I predict that the 2014 is going to be stupidly faster than your 2009. I say that in all seriousness.

i wonder if a 2.53 or a 2.66 from 2009 would be better than a 2.26 for youtube.

My 2009 C2D Mini with 4 Gb RAM and 5400 HDD is still plenty fast on Yosemite (Safari etc). Only the booting takes longer.
