if you need to you'd then transfer to a usb, optical media or external drive for your backup
possibly Apple will offer a hard copy but somehow I doubt it, unless it's sd card or similar

Agreed. I could see them making it a tad cheaper if you get it from the app store and then a DVD version on sale for a bit more.

So, if its an electronic install, would that mean that Apple would remember me buying Lion on my Apple account, in case I needed to format/install again? In that case id have to install Snow Leopard from my USB restore drive, then redownload the Lion update from the app store? Do I have that right?
I'm sure the App Store install for Lion is also part of the beta.

I hope it won't be this app store crap. I need a USB key to physically use. I don't want to restore to Snow Leopard every time I want a fresh install, then update to 10.6.6 to get the App store and then download the whole thing every time. That would be such a hassle.
The app store is nice for small little things but it's not cool to make people download 6 gigs every time they want a fresh install. Some people have metered broadband. Not to mention the hassle of having to install & upgrade SL first. Even just the matter of requiring broadband to install an OS is over the top already.
Not that I do fresh installs every week but I do 'repurpose' my machines sometimes and I tend to prefer a fresh install, especially on an SSD.

Use any computer on the same wifi as you with a optical drive. mac or pc doesn't matter.

however, if you'd socked away the Lion download as an image on some external media, you could always startup from said media and install direct from that.
no need to go down the SL route first
The usb stick we got with our airs is writeable, perhaps we can get a code to flash that drive with new media. Then we dont have to fumble around with a bunch of flash drives. Apple will make it easy though, last thing they want is the apple stores flooded with Mac Air people trying to upgrade their machines.
