How would a current 12core 2.93 stand up against the new SB Xeon MP's?

I know we've been discussing possible speed gains (15-20%) with the new SB Xeons coming but never actually compared to what it would gain difference to?

I returned a 12core a while ago hoping that the august speculation about the possible release would go through.
Been working on my HP that was bundled with my Avid Nitris ever since.

However, I want to get back onto OS X.

So the question is : What do you guys think about the 12core's (2.93) performance compared to what we already know about the SB xeons?

Worth the wait? Or are we talking about minimal enhancements compared to this rig?

Did you see the performance gains from Nehalem to Sandy Bridge? 4 Core. W3580 vs. i7-2600? Multiply that. It will be much faster AND have new graphics and SATAIII and on X79 which will not be a dead end chipset (no more chips to upgrade to).

Just confused me a bit since the 2.93 seems already a beast to me with its 12 cores.

Wasn't sure if that 15%-20% would apply to their current high-end processors as well. thanks for clearing it up for me. Guess I will wait then...

You get perforamnce gains from different areas. One is the clock-for-clock performance a new architecture brings, which is around 10-15% for a lot of applications. Then you get the faster clockrates and/or more cores for the same price as the old model. Then there is the memory performance which is much higher if it matters.

It's a total beast. But it is a chip that's 1.5 years old (pretty old in tech years). SATAIII is worth the wait alone. And if they NEVER come out, well the 2.93GHz 12-core will still be around for you. Maybe even refurbed.
