How would a macbook compare to my PC....

....which is 3ghz P4 ht, 1gb RAM and a GeForce FX 6200 256mb card.

Dont ask about bus or ram speeds or anythin cos i really cant remember, i made it ages ago though only added the gfx card recently.

Macbook i'd like to compare it with is the complete basic white one (with and without 1gb of RAM).

Just curious thats all.

It's going to be better..
But and that's a big one.. The gfx of the 6200 are better then what's inside the macbook.. although that gets a bit fixed by proc and ram so yeah better...

Really hard to compare the two. They do completely different things. The MB has integrated graphics, and is portable. It'll breeze through normal usage, play games on low settings, and get most work done. Your PC can play games on slightly better settings, stays on your desk, and can be upgraded to handle more intensive tasks. Not much to compare.

Cheers from the answers. Im not gonna be playing any games on the macbook so i guess it'll feel much faster. Not good cos its gonna make my PC obsolete..although it'll still be used for all the hard disk space.

Very roughly HT splits the P4 into two processors, so you'd start off at 2 ~1.5 GHz virtual processors.

Add to that that the Core Duo's come from a line of more efficient processors with a shorter pipeline and you end up with a big speed boost. Even a Pentium M ~1.5 GHz will often outpace a 3.0 GHz P4 with HT.

The 1.83 GHz Core Duo in my 17" iMac is a lot faster than the 2.8 GHz HT P4 Dell desktop I have...

The 2.0ghz Core Duo on my MacBook beats my P4 3.2ghz by around 2 minutes 5 seconds on the 8M SuperPI tests, thats a huge difference.

Yeah I benchmarked the MacBook against my PC under WindowsXP so its quite possible to compare and benchmark it directly with the P4.

Well, the 1GB of RAM can easily be had on a MacBook. And the Mac has a substantially more powerful CPU.

But granted that very video card intensive things will be fast on a computer with that kind of video horsepower....

Pentium M 1.5Ghz chips are not faster than P4 3ghz chips at all. I think a 1.5ghz PM would be comparable with a 2.4ghz P4, possibly less.

The great thing about the Pentium M was the energy savings of getting the performance of a processor running at 2.x GHz at 1.x GHz instead.

Core Duo, however, stuck two of those cores together, and wipes the P4 clean off the table

I have a P-M 1.5 GHz Thinkpad at work and for some jobs it is within 10% of the same speed of a brand spanking new 3.0 GHz Pentium D. I've also clocked it (for some particular jobs) as being faster than my 2.8 GHz HT P4.

An overclocked Pentium M is even better than some AMD FX processors

I have a specific custom app from work with a benchmark. For that app, P4s with HT enabled line up exactly with their PII and PIII counterparts at half their clockspeed since the app doesn't take advantage of HT presenting it two CPUs.
