Hi, i have a macbook retina mid 2012 15', it came with Mountain lion installed and i think i did this before but just checking. Can I use the internet recovery tool at startup and would it install the OS that my macbook originally came with ? As for backup, if I backup my macbook right now running on mavericks, would it affect Mountain Lion when I'm restoring everything because its a older operating system ?

Internet Recovery (Cmd-Opt-R) will restore the version that it originally came with. Your backup should be fine for the most part; documents, music etc. are the same regardless of OS and you'll typically only run into problems if you restore stuff out of Library and similar "system" folders.
