Is it going to be possible? With all the contract BS AT&T is making you go through, how can you possibly get one on the website? I really dont want to wait in lines all day to get a phone, id rather just overnight it from Apple. I already have Cingular, already have unlimited data... So should I be able to just get the phone and use it?

What they may do is what alot of other online sites do. You'll buy the phone online, then once purchased it will forward you over to the AT&T website where you choose your plan and give them your info for an account (or provide your account info if you are already a customer). Then the phone will arrive and you will call in to give them the number on SIM to get it activated.

Now that I've written all that though I recall that Amazon does it all on site if I remember correctly. You buy the phone, tell em if you are new user or current user, pick your plan, and then that info is forwarded to cingular and a phone number is shot back to ya. All you had to do when you got the phone was plug in the SIM and charge the phone.

Apple may do the same thing.

This gives them the chance to sell to people not willing to wait in line or who don't live anywhere near an Apple Store or an AT&T store that is getting the iPhone. The get it in the mail and activate it online or by phone. I'm sure AT&T already had systems in place to handle this and made it real easy for Apple to do it. Not to mention AT&T prefers this model b/c their stores are usually understaffed, whereas call-centers and servers are not. Whenever I go to a t-mobile or cingular store there is always a wait and always people getting help, and those are free standing stores in strip malls, not kioks in shopping malls.
