How would you rate typing on the iPad Pro 9.7 VS external.....

I bought an iPad Pro 9.7 yesterday to replace my Air 2. I've always typed on the Air 2, but since the Pro is touted as a game changing replacement for my MacBook I've seriously considered buying the external keyboard and ditching the Macbook. Thing is, I've been using macbooks since they came out and I'm really good at typing on them. I am horribly slow on my Air 2 in comparison.

I have no experience with the latest chicklet keys (12" macbook style, latest MBP). My experience is with all previous Apple keyboards from the poly models to the 2015 MBP I currently use the most.

My requirement for ditching the MB and using the pro exclusively is all down to the keyboard. I can tolerate a slight decrease in speed, but it has to feel the same since I am 14 years into my typing experience on MB's. I looked at the apple keyboard and it doesn't resemble what I am used to. I looked at the Logitech Create based on users saying it is more comfortable than the Apple keyboard and it seems like it would be more familiar. It seems more clicky. I guess when Logitech and Apple partnered on the project Logitech took some good notes.

I doubt I will ever be able to type quickly on the iPad based on my experience with my Air 2. I seem to "think" I'm hitting it right, but the mistakes are many and I spend too much time correcting them. This leaves only the option of external keyboards.

People who are used to typing on the style of MacBooks I have described, please rate your experience in the feel of the Apple Keyboard or Logitech. I'll gladly accept other options of course, but these two seem to be the best based on popular review. It must resemble an MB keyboard on MB's 2015 or below as closely as possible or it won't do me any good. I know where my comfort zone is. Side question: how's the size compared to the MB keyboard?

If all else fails in my quest I will end up with a regular Apple Bluetooth keyboard which I have used for years on my iMacs, but for integration and travel purposes I'd prefer not to.

No amount of personal reviews is going to help you though. Some loved it, some hated it. I love it due to convenience, being water proof and not needing any charge etc, also love the texture of it. Tbh I can type on any keyboard but most people prefer a specific style. You can't get a definite answer until you try one yourself. Either go to an Apple store and try one or buy one and return if you don't like it or can't adjust to it.

Thanks, but I somewhat disagree. That's why I was specific on my personal use of MB keyboards. We all have them. We all know what they are like.

Keyboards are a highly personal preference. I think the virtual keyboard is manageable, but not something I like. I'm leaning towards the Apple Keyboard, as I've not heard many good things about the Logitech.

Most of my iPad 10.5 use is while sitting in the LazyBoy or walking and using in the field. Neither do well with external keyboards so I have got quite used to the on screen keyboard. Especially like the new iOS 11 keyboard where each button has more than one use!

Neither the Logitech nor the Apple Smart Keyboard feels anything like the MBP’s keyboard. If you are seeking to recreate that feeling, I’m afraid no attachable keyboard I know of does that. I do think the ASK feels surprisingly good, but the one for the 9.7 is very cramped and will make your fingers feel it after ten minutes or so. Given your description of your experience, I can say with 90% certainty that you will not enjoy it.

If you won’t be using it on your knees much, then I actually suggest you live with a Smart Cover + a Bluetooth keyboard like the Apple one (or the Logitech K380). You do lose a bit of portability/convenience, but I used to travel with the K380 plus the 9.7 and it’s a good experience even in cramped economy seats.

I’ve since switched to the ASK for the 9.7 for the added convenience, but it does not feel as good (especially at this size).

I use my iPad Air 2 to type meeting notes and lecture notes (when in school). I use the apple keyboard with bluetooth. Its a full size keyboard.
The down side of that is that I can not type on my lap, but need an actual desk/table. Since i would never actually type on my lap, i really don't see it an issue.

Thanks all. Ios11 has really made a great stride in the on screen keyboard and I consider the flip down keys in the update brilliant and intuitive. If I won’t be happy with anything other than the apple bt keyboard then I’ll likely keep working with the new onscreen one. The swipe keys are very quick and I love them.
