Howcome no Ichat!!!!

According to what I have read, there will not be any instant messaging capabilities on the Iphone.

Right now I have a blackberry pearl with AIM on it and I wondering how and why Apple would release the Iphone with Itunes/ quicktime, address book, maps, wifi, ect..ect and not have messaging capabilities.

Anyone else really annoyed that this isnt in the phone? In all honesty, I really use the AIM on my blackberry (on cingular btw) more than almost any other feature and if the Iphone doestn support this it will seriously make me reconsider buying one.

Probably because it would eat into SMS revenues so they had to remove it to sweeten the deal with cingular. Perhaps at a later date, they'll incorporate it. Plus they ran out of space for a webcam pointing back towards the user.

Ha, im sure your joking about the webcam part, but really at least allow Ichat to work when on wifi!

iChat...not so fast

I believe that the document says that there won't be IM'ing available via SMS, ie. using text messaging to communicate with a buddy on your buddy list by texting the appropriate codes. This doesn't mean that there won't be the an iChat widget developed. At least thats how I understand it.

We've got no iDea that the iPhone wont have iChat.
The introduction of the training booklet simply said, some features may not be announced until release.

That's an interesting way of thinking about what was said. If that's the case then I submit that the secret application is iChat.

Currently at&t allows IM services on phones such as the BlackJack
When someone receives or sends an IM they get charged a text message.

If they were to incoporate this similar function in the iPhone I would think they would increase their SMS revenues

It would be if they incorportated an IM service (such as the widget) that may run off of data versus SMS that they would lose SMS revenue.

Well it seems odd that IM'ing is addressed only in the SMS section vs some other sort of overall functionality or widget section of the training guide.

well, video chat is out of the question for obvious (physical) reasons. I'm sure iChat will be implemented...eiter at launch or shortly after. I mean, iPhone does run OS X, doesn't it?

yes, either that or and adium application could be developed.

It could end up being one of those things Apple doesn't include, but also doesn't care if it's later added (such as all the hacks for Apple TV). They probably have a reason why they can't do it, but that doesn't mean it won't be done.

AT&T has Apple by the balls and they are not going to allow things like VOIP or instant messaging, as much as people would want them to. It would be bad business for them, end of story.

On the other hand, how annoyed will users be if after shelling out $30/month extra for an unlimited data plan, they have to shell even more at 15c/message for IMing? While it would be great to have iChat on the iPhone iThink I'll be spending more on service in the first 3 months than on the phone itself . . .
