Can anyone compare the C2D and the G5 imacs in terms of fan noise/output?

you will definitely notice it in a near silent room, it's not that loud, but very noticeable, but don't be fooled by anyone around here saying they are whisper silent.

They are NOT whisper quiet. They are louder than I thought they wre going to be. I can hear mine over music. Mind you this is a Core Duo iMac.

Much quieter than my old eMac but not silent. When I first got it I thought it would be silent. I don't know if it's my imagination but when I first got it, I noticed no noise, but now there's always a hum.

One time Safari crashed and some piece of software that controls the fans must have crashed as well because all the fans came on and it sounded like a jet taking off. But that went away quickly.

Generally I am not annoyed by it at all, and I am easily annoyed. :)

My 24" is virtually silent - same loudness as my 20" Core Duo. My external LaCie drive is much louder than the iMac when it spins up... the only time I can hear the iMac is if my room is completely silent (no air conditioning). Definitely quieter than any PC I've used. I don't think computers come quieter than this, just a light air sound.

24" here is also almost dead silent. Very, very low fan noise. There is no chance i can hear it over my music. I have to get my ear by the top of the case where the big vent is to hear any fan noise.

The cube did, unless you had a custom gfx card, oh and I never used one, but the clear color iMacs (ruby sage indigo etc), had no fans I believe, so I assume silent?

iMac is silent

I have had my new iMac C2D for about 2 months. I have a very good hearing and very sensitive to noise. ONLY in the dead silent night, you would hear a slight fan (wind) noise if you are sitting right in front of it. The harddisk or the DVD drive will make 5 times louder noise if you happen to access them (which is normal). Overall, iMac is very quiet and i don't know if making it quieter is ever possible.

Oh my greatness people. My stepdad and his PC can be heard throughout my house! But my iMac is a dream compared to that thing! How can you actually complain about a slight whirring in the background. The HD working overtime is louder than the fans. And if you want silence please don't burn any CD's or DVDs, they might just be "louder than your music" and that would be a tragedy wouldn't it :( Infact, the only way to achieve whisper wuiet computing is to leave your iMac off, that way no one will complain about noise!

I'm done, feel free to make personal jabs at my dignity now that I have offended your sensitive ears.

The only was I can hear the fan on my 17" Core 2 Duo is if the room is completely silent and i place a stethoscope up to the fans and put it through an amplifier.

But seriously it is the quietest computer I have ever owned and definitely quieter than my friends G5

lol

lol, my hat off to you good sir, i have a rev. a imac g5. we were the ones who went forth and bought the rev. a apple products, and i sit here right now and write this in front of a rather loud imac, with a wasp for a cpu. trust, if you plonked a new imac in front of me now, i would be able to hear my heart beat: rev. a imacs are a pile of smelly poo. consider yourself lucky! i sacrificed my ears for your comfort, after much complaint to apple!

again, feel free to make personal jabs at my dignity now that I have offended your sensitive ears.

My brand new C2D 17" iMac is dead silent. I'm just running the internet and iTunes though, if that makes any difference.
