While the finder is open, under View, select View Options. At the bottom of the open menu you can select what type of background you desire. Very helpful when you have a different background for different folders so when minimized in the dock you can easily tell which is which. Hope that helps.

HowTo (Step by Step)

Can someone tell me how one adds a background image to the Finder window? I know I've seen this.

Thanks.

1) Open any Finder Window
2) Press Command + J
3) Examine the options (hint: look at the bottom of the list)

Or choose View Options from the view menu

Wait, is it different in 10.3?

Edit: I'm too late. BTW, the picture must be big to cover the window background. It refuses to tile.

Yeah, it took me a while to realize it could only be modified in 'Icon View' mode, bummer. I wonder if that's just a Panther thing or not. I'm not used to viewing in icon mode but I'll give it a shot.
Am I right about this or is there something else I might be missing?
thanks for the tips guys.

you need to be in icon view.

my guess is that this is not an option in list view since it might be hard to see files and folders when they are that small and there is an image behind them.

Yep, I comply. I was in collumn view entirely so I didn't understand why i wasn't getting that option. I still think we should have the OPTION of having an image behind the collumn or list view modes. I just want a color or a simple background texture, not a detailed photo. Anything to crazy would of course detract, but the limitation is bothering me.

Hmmm...this should be the next Macrumors poll: How many people use icon mode and how many use collumn or lists mode?
