I have an older printer that I do not have the software for. Will I be able to connect it to my new macbook air m1 or do I need that software?
And better, could I do so wirelessly?

What's the exact model of your HP Envy? You may be able to download drivers for it. You don't need the HP software which is likely outdated anyway.

Start here:

Once you enter your model name/number, it should lead you to a download of the appropriate drivers and the HP Utility package to help manage all functions of your printer from your Mac. Good luck!

Options are:
1. Connect printer to WiFi/LAN and and enable AirPrint in the printer (aka Internet Printing.) Don't need to install any proprietary HP bloatware. NOTE: Some older ENVY printers will not connect to 802.11ax (aka WiFi 6) access points/routers.
2. If your ENVY is an all-in-one with scanner/fax, most ENVY all-in-one printers have a built in web page you can access via a browser. Newer ENVY printers you can also access the printer via the HP iOS app.

Be warned. This is a difficult area

Hence, the reason to not connect via USB and to print wirelessly, if you have the option.

If you have a HP printer that only connects via USB, I learned to avoid USB only printers decades ago when I excommunicated Windows from my home and went 100% *nix

Yes it does have a scanner! Other than that Im extremely NOT well versed with computer stuff, and so confused! ? Do you think I will be able to use it without plugging it into the computer? Its an ENVY 7640. I dont remember when I bought it.

Awesome, thanks!
Before you do that, just try it first using Airprint. Keeps it simple, and should be automatically recognized, provided the printer is being used wirelessly, as previous poster said. Airprint also includes a scanning function.
A lot of these manufacturer software includes bloatware - a bunch of complications and functions that you don't really need and just complicate printing.
In fact Brother, for many of their printers, now recommend using Airprint over their own software and drivers

My father has the exact same printer. It has both wired and wireless Ethernet. If you have an option, use wired Ethernet.

You can install there HP Smart app for macOS or iOS to control the printer.

Just enable AirPrint. No drivers required for macOS.

Why do you recommend wired Ethernet, I'm curious? Also, I don't have any cables from the printer that can be used with this new MacBook so that's why I just want to use wifi. I would think its easiest, no?

Can you please explain what is AirPrint and how do I get it?
