HP Slate 7 - HPs 2nd tablet attempt

Basically a Nexus 7, but with a 1.6ghz dual-core and beats audio. Front and rear camera's. ANDROID 4.1.x Jelly Bean. Selling point is the $169 price tag for a 'good' tablet running Android.

The HP Slate7 includes a 3-megapixel camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front for chatting, videos and photos.

Ahhh, stop. You know what I meant. And if the UK does its normal thing by changing the $ to a £, plus 20% VAT, you are still looking at a 200 quid tablet with descent specs and because of the size, both tablet and phone apps will look good on it. I think HP is being smart this time by taking cheaper spec'd parts, a design already tooled for and selling it at a bargain price. Profit may be low per unit sold, but at least they are getting their name back into the mobile market and maybe build off this?
Certainly smarter than RIM, who has a mediocre phone, but trying to sell at iPhone prices.

Given the choice I'd take "cheap plastic" over scratched up aluminum any day.

As for low priced tablets, I don't know how they can get any lower now. I bought my daughter an Acer Iconia B1 (had a little play with it myself first ) and at £99 it serves her perfectly.

The screen isn't at all good, its not the fastest hardware either but BBC iPlayer works perfect on it, Pled streams fine an she must have 30 odd games on there that I've bought or gotten free from Google Play to keep her entertained.

The best thing is, being plastic (something people here scorn) would make me less worried about it taking a tumble.

I do expect a little more premium from HP normally though. Not sure how this will compete with the Nexus 7.

If you have iPlayer working and Plex set up on a 99 quid tablet, and plays all the games she wants, well that sounds like a perfect tablet. I know iPlayer can be a pain to get working on some hardware or software.
Being plastic on the back is actually better to me than cold aluminium. Feels better in the hands and no worries for scratches or dents.

It isn't a top of the line tablet. This is a cheap tablet, with mid-level specs meant to get HP back into mobile. At $169, can't really complain. Plus, it can be rooted and over clocked, and of course ROMs will be developed that will have the latest OS from Google. But even without doing that, this will give anyone (especially kids) a great little tablet for a low price.

$150 would be a better selling point.

Nexus 7's are being dropped on Craig's for $160-180 more times than I can count.

Android just doesn't pull in the money iOS does. It's time for everyone to realize that. Google did. That's why the Nexus 7 and 4 are penetrating the market at the price range they are. Google realized that digital sales is where the revenue is because you won't command the mark up that Apple takes in.

This device is 'okay', but I think this thread is about as far as my interest in it will extend.

They would have been better off just putting that 3 MP on the front and call it a Skype camera and forget the rear as it is useless for most pics and VGA on the front blows for Skype quality when compared to all the new devices out there with 1.2 and higher HD cameras.

It's $170. It's not going to be replacing your point and shoot or SLR. The Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 don't even have rear facing cameras.

I know it is $170 and I know the Nexus and 7 do not even have rear cameras and you know what, having a VGA front and 3 MP rear, given the choice, I would rather have a quality front and skip the rear it is useless IMHO. Taking crap pictures is a waste of time, then you may as well carry your point and shoot.

They put a camera on it to tick a spec checkbox, 3 MP and a VGA is garbage in this day and age at any price point.

Give me fewer HIGH QUALITY features over a laundry list of crap features at the same price anyday.

It's only $30 less than Nexus 7 and you get worse screen, battery, cpu, onboard memory, front facing camera. Also doesn't come with GPS or NFC. What you gain is 3MP back camera which will probably be pretty poor so there's not much point in it, Micro SD Card slot and stereo speakers. Also it's running an outdated android.
If it was on sale for $100 I think it could of had a real chance of being a good budget tablet.
