They didn't measure up because most of them were based on slug Atoms, but this laptop probably has the fastest all around quad core APU in the Chromebook/netbook/lightlap ($200 to $350) price range.
Great. And back in the Atom days, those were the best/fastest chips you could get within that price range, too. That still didn't make them any good.
Coupled with a mini SSD and option of online/offline storage and you have a more viable laptop replacement. For people who tire of the limits and the weight of tablet may switch too.
First off, are you just cutting and pasting off marketing copy? It sure seems like it.
As for the "mini SSD," which is really just marketing speak for "cheap and small:" With an install of Windows 8.1 and your apps, see how much of that space you have left. I doubt most users will be happy with it. Also, what's the throughout of that SSD? Write/erase longevity? Will it last me longer than a year?
As for "online/offline storage," Yeah, that's called "internet access." Why is this a selling point? What laptop purchased within the last ten years, of any brand or model, lacks "online/offline storage" capability?
Agree to disagree, but this IS the kind of laptop that both Steves would endorse!
Woz is still alive... so why isn't he touting how great this thing is? I'll tell you why: because it's just another cheap sub-laptop.
A) HP was where Woz got his start and where both Woz and Jobs offered their first colorful multimedia Apple computer.
HP also rejected the idea, and thus Apple was born. Not to mention, the HP of the mid to late 1970s has very little to do with the HP of today, and absolutely
nothing to do with why this model merits any endorsement from any Apple employee, past or present.
B) Woz loves tech that is designed right and tight and wanted tech priced that most people could afford.
The specs alone make it pretty clear that the designers of this model are making the same mistakes of the netbook era. It's designed for people who are trying to get a laptop on the cheap, and aren't caring (at the point of purchase) if it's any good.
C) Jobs of course would replace the OS with a light OS for the AMD Jaguar/Puma X86,
Really? You're going toe peak for a dead person you've never met?
Everyone in the Macbook forums who have had to deal with annoying noisy fans, cleaning dustballs and furballs out of vents, and laptops that felt like hot irons on their laps would appreciate a cool silent alternative that allows the user to concentrate on their work or entertainment.
Can you point to some recent threads in the MBA forum where any of the above has been a complaint?
Consumer paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for technology should actually be able to fully enjoy their purchase without compromise.
But we're not paying hundreds of thousands of dollars. The base model MBA doesn't even cost *one* thousand dollars and is a far better purchase than this HP subnetbook.
