OK, so I was in a mall Sunday where my wifes phone was reading "H" for HSDPA with FULL signal and my phone for some bizarre reason was "Searching..." even though we're both AT&T. I switched it off and back on and it came back in EDGE mode (we'd moved in to a restaurant by then and the signal was indeed EDGE for both our phones. However after leaving the restaurant my wifes phone returned to H mode and mine steadfastly stayed on EDGE and refused to go to 3G. After leaving it a while I left the mall and in the car park restart my iPhone again. This time it came back in 3G mode. Weird !!!

So, anybody else seen this behavior. Also, I'm wondering if this is a problem with the iPhone handing off to a HSDPA network vs UMTS. I have no problem here at work in my 3G network. Is there a way to tell in the iPhone whether a 3G network is HSDPA or UMTS ?

Mark.

Well it appears (i'm learning this as a go along) that my work 3G is actually HSDPA as well. According to a speed test i'm getting 1.4Mbps download. Assuming that the H on my wifes phone (a Sony Ericsson) means HSDPA then it can't be that. I've never had problems with 3G and network connection here.

Must have been just a glitch.
