HTC's revenues decline by a massive 64% in Q1 2016

I really hope the new HTC 10 and VIve can help them turn things around in the next few quarters. But will they sell enough to make up for the losses?
HTC has great designs. I hope they can turn it around and not get bought by another company.
But they need to fire their PR dept...hire a new firm and truly market the 10.
Then they need to fire their release manager and get someone who can get a new product to reviewers and the public that is truly ready and representative of the fine products they make.
No more of this stuff about the next update will make reviews better.....

HTC's latest earnings figures continue to illustrate the manufacturer's downfall in recent years. The Taiwanese vendor posted an overall revenue of NT$14.8 billion ($463 million), a drastic 64% decrease from the NT$41.52 billion ($1.3 billion) it managed in Q1 2015. Operating loss for the quarter was at NT$4.8 billion ($150 million), a far cry from the NT$360 million ($11.6 million) profit recorded during the same period last year.

The vive might. The HTC 10? Not as confident.

But I'm really hoping they get back into smartphone dominance with the HTC Nexus this year.

The combination of their hardware plus Google's Android N and support could be killer. Even more so if they can figure out full water proofing and wireless charging.

Whilst I'm sure the HTC 10 is a good device it sure is ugly. Similar to the Samsungs pre edge days albeit metal and not plastic.

Can't see HTC turning the corner. The VIVE also looks too cumbersome to succeed.

I am not sure what that means exactly. Marketing, consistency, predictable quality are probably the biggest factors to sales. Look at Apple, Starbucks, Coca Cola, McDonalds. Sure not everyone likes the "taste", but if you do like it, you never get a "bad" version of it. It is always just the same and gives you want you want.

HTC had bad quality for a while after a string of really nice products. People lost trust. They were no longer certain they would get a good product. They lost their customers. Something very hard to gain back with how expensive these devices are.

If it compromises the speakers or anything else, I would personally disagree. I have never once had a waterproofing issue with any phone. And I live in the pacific northwest. Rain or common moisture don't seem to be an issue with phones. And I don't typically have water of any depth surrounding me. Perhaps if I was a lifeguard or boat captain it would be useful.

And for wireless charging, if it means a glass back, doesn't seem worth it either. While I don't always have water around me, I do always have the hard ground....the real number one cause of damage for a phone. And a glass back just adds to the chances of being damaged. Unbreakable glass (oh wait that is plastic) would be OK. Then people will just complain it is cheap though and not "flagship" quality.

I do a lot of hiking and off roading. I used to carry my phones in a plastic bag in my shorts in case they got wet. I hike around a lot of lakes, streams and rivers. I have fallen in many times. With my S7 i don't have to worry about it getting wet. Waterproofing makes things easier for me anyway.....

That's a great point about the speakers. But I think they can accomplish good, loud, and clear speaker quality and still have waterproofing.

As for wireless charging, the technology exists to wireless charge with metal phones. Maybe there are issues with overheating? Also, didn't HTC say they could have included it with the metal build but just chose not to?

Either way, that would be two huge bonuses if they somehow worked both in there without much compromise for the HTC Nexus.

The glass back on my Note 5 has proven much more durable than any aluminum backed phone I've owned. I'm sure if I dropped it just right it would break, but an aluminum phone would dent nicely with the same impact IMO. I've also found glass phones to be MUCH more durable in terms of scuffs and scratches, I can literally drag a key across the back of my Note 5 with firm pressure and not even a scratch. Try that with an aluminum backed phone. It's nice to have a phone which doesn't require a case or even a skin. I totally appreciate an aluminum phone, it feels really nice in the hand. But it just seems like going backwards.

Wireless charging: to each their own, but now that I've tasted it I couldn't live without it. Not having to plug in that stupid non-reversible mini usb cable in the dark, or every time I get in my car is priceless.

Not sure why the negativity about the HTC 10, I played around with it slightly this weekend and it's a very nice phone with a lot to offer since the last model.

I hear ya about the wireless charging. I find great convenience with it as well.

About HTC... I actually think the Nexus program is a lifeline to HTC! I think they're very fortunate Google gave them this opportunity. To me, if feels like a lifeline more than a risk of cannibalization.

I suppose it depends how much money they make with each Nexus phone sold, versus what they make for selling their own phones. We'll know if the 2016 nexus differentiates itself from the 10 soon enough I suppose.

I agree...maybe no boom sound? But what about a larger Nexus? The 10 is 5.2 is HTC going to make a 5.5 model too?
