Hi, after being a long time pc user i would like to know the equivilant to microsoft notepad or textpad. something nice and easy to build sites in html/css.
Text edit opens as it looks in the browser not in the markup language.
Thanks

cheers that looks pretty good, will give it a try.
will try xcode aswell. dont understand why its not just installed. cant take that much room up

with textedit you can disable rich text formats and html render by doing the following.

Turn on plain text in the format area of new documents in the preferences and then in the open and save tab you can turn off ignore rich text commands in HTML files. you should be able to write and edit html documents. however if you want rich text you will have to reset these things when using textedit.

I however use textmate for my web development and there are many other text editors that are good as well. Text Wrangler, smultron, taco html, SubEthaEdit, etc.

I would second the Taco recommendation. It is a nice easy to use free piece of software.

I found this.

Your best bet is probably Xcode. It's included with your mac. You will need to install it from "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" which came with your mac.

Please ignore this. For building sites in (X)HTML / CSS your best bet is really not Xcode.

Xcode is for application development.

thanks for the replies. i am using the suggested rage web designer the first person posted and it seems to do the trick just fine.
I am impressed with the sheer amount of replies, thanks mac rumors!
