HTTP mail possible in Mail?

Is there any way to check a Hotmail address (which is an HTTP mail account) in Apple's Mail program?

I'm a switcher (just got off the phone with Apple to place the order!) and am wondering if I should find a POP account to use as my primary address if I can't check mail in Mail.

Does anyone have any recommendations for free POPMail accounts? I've used Hotmail forever and use OutlookExpress on my current laptop.

are there other mail programs that allow for easier integration with HTTP mail accounts? someone mentioned thunderbird in another thread.

what's the deal with mail programs? is Mail the only one worth paying attention to?
