Huge iTunes Library on iMac?

So this might seem like a stupid question, but I really have no idea :/

I've been using my G4 PB for the past few years as my main computer, so I usually keep my entire music collection on an external harddrive and/or my iPod, while keeping about 6-8gb of music on my PB... but I've decided it's time to buy a new desktop as my main computer and I'm going with the 2.8gHz iMac 24" (Well, I'm waiting to see if they release something in the next couple weeks... hehe).

My question is, if I add my entire music collection (120+ GB) to iTunes on the iMac, is it going to be able to handle it? I mean, does anyone know from experience what the load time is for iTunes, or does the number of sounds even matter? I would think it doesn't effect performance at all, but I just want to make sure before I go ahead and do so :)

Itunes won't open 120GB of songs. It only indexes where the file is. Having 5 tunes or 100000 of them it's the same.

Okay, that's what I figured, but I just wanted to make sure :) Thanks so much! Now I'm even more psyched to get a new computer... hehe :) :D

Well for iPhoto, the computer has to load all the thumbnails of the pictures. How many to you have? I have around 9,000, and my 1.42GHz iBook still works well with iPhoto.

I am about halfway through recording my vinyl collection no problems with a big library here (ps no video just music);)

Wow... that's awesome :) I would probably have somewhere around that had I understood the whole "bit rate" thing about 5 years ago... I ripped my entire music collection to mp3 (at a low bitrate), and shortly thereafter, my roommate stole my 300+ CD collection and moved back to Philadelphia (I'm in California). I never had the chance to reencode my collection :/

However, once I get a new computer that can handle video conversions better than my PBG4, I'll also have my 229.87 GB worth of moves to convert and import into iTunes ;) Not sure if I want to convert and import my 162.62 GB of TV shows, though... we'll see ;)

Holy crap! That's amazing! I have more songs than that, but CLEARLY the quality isn't nearly as good as what you've been ripping as :eek:

1. 120gb ain't huge - mine's more than twice that. ;)
2. I actually host my library on an old G4-400, which handles the job just fine, so you shouldn't have any worries about the iMac.

I have 14,164 pictures in iPhoto, and my PBG4 opens iPhoto very quickly... iLife '06 should have fixed any lag with opening it. iLife '05, however, was horrible with large libraries :(

Thanks. It looks like I can get iLife '06 at Amazon. I read some user reviews of iLife '08, and they all said to stay with '06 due to bugs in '08, and because '08 deletes your Albums, so you are left with a bunch of unorganized photos. Any comments on '08?
 
I have an iMac 24" 2.4 ghz with 4 GB Ram. Running iLife 08 with close to 24,000 pictures. Runs like a dream. This was my first mac and I am not disappointed. Best computer purchase I've ever made.
 
Anyone out there got their large iPhoto/iTunes libraries on network drives? I moved mine onto a NAS device (gigabit) recently and whilst iTunes is bearable (esp if you keep the library XML on your local drive but just the content remote) iPhoto is not. So it's going back local. Wanted to allow photo access across multiple machines... no can do like this.
 
On my MacBook, 140GB needs more time to load iTunes. On the first start up after boot. I think with about 70GB it started right after clicking the symbol and after that it needed a few seconds more. And if you search a song it's not instant anymore. But it's still like under 2 seconds. So nothing to bad.

I use all the 08 apps and am very happy with them. iPhoto does not delete all your albums at all - it preserves them. There may be some upgrade horror stories out there, but it does not delete them by design (always backup before upgrading, too!). iPhoto 08 does add the events organizing tools, which I personally think are great, as they automate a lot of the photo organizing. But the albums are still there, and I still use them a lot too.

iMovie 08 generated quite an uproar because it was such a change in UI and work flow, but I like it and find it to be more productive and a natural work flow for my type of projects (your usual consumer-level cheesey adding music to a montage of video clips and photos).
