huge swap used size ! bad memory management

I have problems with my memory management on 10.10.3 " actually it was even on 10.9.5 "
as you can see on the picture there is like 4gb free but the swap used is 1gb !!
i know that the swap used when the memory is full , but i have like 4 gb free !
can someone explain to me if that is normal ?!

Normal. That is a cumulative swap figure since the last restart so it depends on what your memory usage has been, not necessarily just what it is now. Your graph is green so you don't have anything to worry about. How much swap is used depends on the apps you have running and been running since that last restart. Right now I have 12GB used of my 16GB and 700MB swap used.

1GB isn't that big, but if you're worried about it, reboot and that will clean it out.

I don't think seeing 938MB of swap space is an indictment on Yosemite's memory management.

Let me guess, you have a degree in computer science?

No?

Then why do you consider it to be bad memory management?


A decent OS will pro-actively page inactive pages out to disk so that if and when memory is required for some other purpose, the swap out is already done. It can just dump the pages in memory immediately and re-allocate them.

If it had not paged them to disk already, the memory allocation would stall while they are paged out.
