I have noticed that my replacement iMac is humming a bit. When I wake the computer up from sleep it whirs up like a second after and starts again. I can hear it from normal distance from the screen. Is this normal?

Does anyone now whether its normal noise, or theres something wrong. Its kinda louder than my old PC desktop computer.
It was very silent, but still.
Talked to applecare, and sent in a soundclip trying to show what it was like. Problem is that the iMac it self couldnt really record it properly så it was just a lot of background noise on recording
Think applecare will replace it though.
But if its normal, id like to keep it, as I have perfect screen.

Mine never clicks, apart from the HD, but thats so low its got nothing to do with it.

Hell yeah you do, especially when having a Seagate ;-) Sounds like having my ear directly in my external drive... when sitting 2 feet away :-(
Hey guys! I don't hear any clicking but this morning I can't hear the vibration as much anymore. But last night it was really driving me crazy cos it was quite loud. The only way to describe it was that it was almost like the desk was vibrating too and that if I lifted the iMac up the humming noise disappeared completely. I'm 99.9% sure the iMac I had a week ago with the screen defect did not hum/vibrate like this.
Well, I use WD drives, you only hear the humming of the spinning drive, and no crunching (even if one of them sounds like a fridge), and a Toshiba in my Mini which is dead silent.
Only Seagate drives I have are these:
I guess you can't compare them to a drive Apple sticks inside an iMac. And they crunch. I have a bunch of Quantum drives, these are even worse. Thankfully, they don't produce hard drives anymore.
Yep, i agree that modern drives should not crunch that much. But as it seems they are still out there, and Apple is in love with them.
Thats the only real pain with my new 2010 iMac i7. But as it is a familiar und not unpleasant sound, i'll stick to it.

This is happening to the unit I received yesterday as a replacement for a yellow tinged 21.5. (this second unit has the yellow tinge too, for those who are interested xD)
After a while of using it, I noticed this weird and bothering humming that disappears when lifting the iMac from the table, I too found that out. It also disappears when the hard-drive stops, just an instant before the machine completely shuts down. It is like the table was vibrating, but it is not... When I lift some objects around the iMac (e.g. my hi-fi) it stops too... I am no expert and I really can't understand all this, but it is VERY annoying and the first unit I had did not make this sound, so it is a flaw. This one is definately going back too...

Sounds like the PSU buzz issue i also had twice!
Talked to the applecare folks today for 30 minutes..the technical guy pretended as if he never heard of the problem before.
Once i told him that it seems like a thing that many imac owners encounter he went into denial.
Actually i think i was better informed about the details of the problem than him...those dudes should prepare themselves.
After a while it all got to much for him and he passed me on to the salesfolks for a exchange.
Here i actually have to give credit where credit is due.
The lady was very friendly and forthcoming.
Offered me to keep the black sheep till the new one, hopefully flawless machine arrives.
Said no cause it would be a pain in the neck to install/deinstall all the programs i need to work.
Still 10 days wait again for the next one to come!
Well let's hope third time is a charmer :-D

Ditto, Apple's customer support was excellent for me. My replacement (3rd) should be here by next Friday. 3rd time lucky. :d
Does anyone suspect that it could be a GPU problem of some sorts or maybe an SSD issue? It's just I've noticed that with a game I play, when it loads part of the world map from the cache it takes like 1-2 seconds where on the 1st iMac I had (half dark screen) it was fairly instant.
