I would appreciate some advice on the following. I travel frequently abroad and naturally I want to limit my data usage. Since I still want to be able to make use of the functionality of some apps like mail and whatsapp, I need to manually switch of each and every app and leave data usage on for these few I still want to use.

Is there an alternative option to do this quickly, cause going through 50 apps or so every few days, switching them on and off is really time consuming and annoying. It would be great to create a travel profile - which switches off a preset number of apps while roaming and leaves others on based on your preference.

Thanks!

For iOS I can only say it is impossible. And there is no sign of introducing such function in iOS 10 whatsoever.
This reminds me that the feature you mentioned was a famous feature in pre-iPhone era.

Perhaps with a jailbreak, but not stock iOS. You'll need to just remember and switch, or invest in a better mobile plan.
