Hunt for an MMO

Hello,
I have been looking for ages for a new MMO. I run only snow leopard and would like to play a fun MMO that could keep me busy for a few months. Right now I have been playing mostly browser games like AQ Worlds and Runescape. Anyone have suggestions?
 
if you are like me, then you've played all the "level up and quest" generic mmo's and are sick of it. there are 2 unique mmo's right now that i am keeping tabs on

all points bulletin:
mmo of basically a cops vs robbers game. you play as either part of a gang with a mission to rob a bank, or as part of the police force called to stop the criminals. due out in later 2010

love:
made by a single developer, very interesting concept. you cooperate with other players to dynamically build/defend a city against spawned ai. just recently released, i have yet to try it out but its uniqueness just draws me in

Guys, guys, guys, I know about WoW. I just dont want to get sucked into it. The cops and robbers does look interesting.

I guess I am just looking for something that can tide me over until:
1) Diablo 3
2) Guild Wars 2
3) Earth Eternal
4) SW:TOR (hopefully comes to mac)

Meh, you don't have to get "sucked into" WoW. I've been playing casually (4 or 5 hours/week) for years.

Agreed. I'm almost through the 10-day trial, having never played it before, and can definitely see it being casual-friendly. It's easy to learn as well, with all the resources out there for it.
 
Eve Online

Check out EVE Online - it has a MAC client and it not the typical MMO...

It’s better than it used to be. Although they HAVE added more detail since…they also added more hand holding and noob stuff to do to acclimate you.

Anyway, I recommend WoW. It’s noob friendly and EVE is NOT a “first MMO” type of game. WoW doesn’t have to “suck you in”. Its friends who do this to you and make you play with them. Just don’t make those kind of friends. There are lots of “casual guilds” out there who have member with kids and jobs, and spouses to waste their time with when they aren’t playing games.

Wow is still stunning after these years because the “art” makes up for the “crappy graphics”. All the music is orchestrated and the ambiance is very immersive and fits the scenery. They hire some top notch designers to make this crap up.

Just bootcamp it. If you want to play games on a Mac, that's often the best way to do it. Anyway, it looks like STO is "not finished". They seem to be missing a lot of content. For now, I'd let the hardcore trekkies support the development of the final product. :p
 
Without Bootcamp, you are really limiting yourself. If you had it I would recommend Allods Online. It's well worth it.

He said fun! WoW is tedious.

I would like to play Aion(Win Only), but never got a chances.
I'm waiting for Diablo III too, but who knows when that will come out(!).

That's why it's so good... It's not full of whinging kids, team killing, and spoiling the game.

Join a good Corp, get into 0.0 as soon as possible, and you will learn more in two weeks than you will in 12 months playing with yourself (Literally :D ).
 
I am an AVID MMO player and I would have to say that the best MMO's on the market right now are:

Lord of the Rings Online
Darkfall Online
Everquest 2 (if you dont mind how outdated it is)
Final Fantasy XI (yes, its still going very strong)
Dungeons and Dragons Online (SO good for a free game)
Vanguard (sure its got a low population but it is beautiful and immserive)

I am also waiting for the old republic and guild wars 2, but Im REALLY waiting for Final Fantasy XIV. That game will be my saving grace ha.

I tried LotRO in beta and then like 2 years ago. From what I saw it still was like “WoW Lite” The graphics are DX10 and nice but it just looks like Earth mostly so it’s nothing that creative. I thought it was boring and there was barely anyone to play with because it lost so many subscribers. It’s mostly PVE with some weird arena PVP thing going with it because it tries to stick to lore. It’s interesting if you’re a LotR Tokien fanatic, but I found it tries to be like WoW, but…NOT!

Don’t forget that DDO is free because no one would pay for it after a while so they reduced the servers and eventually made it free so that it won’t completely die off. The last time I tried DDO, it reminded me of a 3D Diablo 2.

These 2 share some aspects of the "feel" to the game because they are made by the same Turbine company.




EDIT: Actually it was less than a year ago then I gave LotRO a go. I checked the screenshots. :p Seemed like such a long time ago...

So maybe by that time the game has cooled off and not as many ppl still play it. They released an exp in Dec 2009 so not sure how it is after that.

Is Vanguard solo friendly? I was in the beta and seemed to remember that at some point, maybe level 20 you had to party to move ahead? One thing that can be said about WoW, it's very solo and small party friendly.

Yeah Vanguard is much more solo friendly than it used to be, every game is now since WoW's success. Unfortunately I don't play MMO's to play solo, when played like this they are just very empty shells of single player RPG's.

While LoTRO may feel like WoW at first you come to find that the pve is much more involved. Probably one of the best PvE games out there at the moment.

Windows? yuck.. you can bootcamp all you want....

I'd rather play something in OSX even if it was only half the performance.

I NEVER sit and just play a game without doing other things... Lose my whole OS and all my software while playing a game? I'd rather just not play.
