If apple decided to make their next version of
the Macbook have a built in iPad in the screen would you buy something like that?

It could have a detachable screen or a
flip around screen (like some old school tablets)
that when used would switch it into ipad
mode (think about using frontrow
type of switch).

Any ideas about how this could or could not work?

It could certainly work if they chose to go down that path. In fact, it's exactly what the new Lenovo tablet is doing. One of many reports about it are here http://asia.cnet.com/crave/2010/01/05/lenovo-reveals-11-6-inch-ideapad-u1-detachable-tablet/

I REALLY like this design and it makes so much sense to be working on your "full laptop" setup and pop the screen/tablet off and still have access to your data in a slim portable tablet mode.

I'm sure there are pros & cons to various designs but I really do think Lenovo's concept is ahead of everyone else, including Apple.

Old school? WTF, I use a $2,300 Lenovo X200 Tablet every day. Was just released in the past few months.

Are you from the future or just really sheltered?
