Hypothetical "iTV" customers, how often will you upgrade?

A lot of Apple products I like to update every year. My laptops I upgrade when AppleCare runs out and sell them on eBay. You cannot do this with a TV. In addition, if Apple software differentiates iTV upgrades, are people going to buy buying $2000 TV sets for a few features?

I hope they still offer the Apple TV as it currently is but give it the new TV's features.

Without knowing the specifics of cost, features, or Apple's update cycle I don't understand the point of this poll.

We don't know how much an Apple television would cost, so perhaps 1-2 year upgrade cycles would be possible, if it was a lot cheaper than $2,000. One thing Apple is good at is entering an existing market and getting people to spend a lot more than they typically used to.

There's no real reason why the "AppleTV" side of the television needs to be upgraded that often though. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are quite effective media hubs, and both are more than 6 years old. Apple could just push out updates to add apps/features as necessary.

This is one of the major drawbacks to an "iTV" as you have called it. Many people hang on to their TV's for 5-10 years.

I agree that the stand alone Apple TV product is MUCH more attractive for this reason. Even a stand alone set top box would be an improvement over the whole TV.

I think we need something between the current Apple TV and a full blown iTV, unless you have some way to replace the "computer" portion of the TV, without having to replace the whole TV screen and cabinet - and that doesn't seem like a very "Apple like" solution...

The question is more of a general than a specific one. Most people keep their TVs for a long time. Do you think that people will Upend that? I don't.

If I had an Apple Unicorn I would ugrade it probably every 3 years ... maybe four if the latest Unicorn had the features I had to have and depending on the Unicorn's price point.
