I made the mistake of buying a base 2017 imac assuming it was the latest one for only a few hundred$ less than the base 2019.

Would I have gotten any benefit out of the more powerful 2019 one considering I'm only using it to browse the web/emails and some photo editing? My 2017 feels like a pretty snappy machine so far.

Just looking for someone to tell me it would of made no difference to me to make me feel a bit better about my purchase haha.

It would have made a difference. Return it if you need a more powerful machine.

Otherwise the 2017 is a great machine too, for most people. You can use that extra few hundred for something else.

Didn't they make a ultra-budget 1.6Ghz version of the 21.5" for 2017?

If its the 21.5" 2.3ghz base version, return it. Its not 4K. The 2019 is 4k. Be sure you get at least the 1TB Fusion, not the 1TB 5400rpm base drive.

Honestly the better buy is the 1499 top tier 21.5" comes w i5, fusion, faster 4GB video GPU for $100 over the $1399 i3 optioned w/ fusion($100).

If you must stay as close to 1099, then the 1299 base 2019 4K i3 with discrete 2GB video GPU and 5400 drive (errgh!) is at least several leaps better than the old 1080p 2.3ghz, integrated video model.

Assumming it's the one described in this document,

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP760?locale=en_US

it's still a good computer. It may not have the hexcore cpu, but some users won't need that.

You're good.

You might not like it for that. There's only one way to find out.

If the amount of time taken to complete the tasks is acceptable, you're good. If not, you will be dissatisfied.

If it's this machine,

you should be ok unless you do a lot of intense photo editing. Try it and see.

This can be upgraded to a 2TB NVMe 3 x4 SSD only for about $770 including labor. Won't make web browsing any faster but photo editing? Oh yea...

Yes that is the machine I have. I'm not talking about intensive photo editing, just very basic sort of stuff like on apple photos haha. Ive been using it for past couple days and I'm actually really happy with it. I could be wrong, but surely for what I am using it for I wouldn't notice a difference between the 2017 vs 2019? I definately plan on adding another 8gb of ram though.

You should be fine. I have the exact same machine with base everything except for memory--I have the 16gb. I do intense photo editing with photoshop, video editing with final cut pro and after effects, and coding with Xcode and I have no issues at all.

I bought the 2017 27" iMac a few weeks ago because Best Buy had the $1999.00 model marked down really cheap and I have been wanting to upgrade my 2015 21" iMac.

As I see it, it is the same thing as buying a new car off the lot that's a few years old and dealers need to move. There's nothing wrong with it, it does what I need it to do and I saved $500 bucks off the 2019 model. I plan to add more ram, but for the web design and Photoshop I do, this model is quite fast and will last me many years. Knock wood.

You’ll be fine. I’m still using a late 2014 5k i7 4ghz 4core.
I edit Fuji GFX (50 megapixels) without a problem.

Enjoy

I notice many of the vendors, including Apple, are less than up front on the year of the machines they are selling. A mistake like the OP's can be very easy to make.

An honest seller always shows the year of the machine's manufacture in the first line of an ad to sell.

I see another post here with the same deal . Where did you buy your Mac ? A2
