I am a PRO and just bought the new iMac!

I really think it is stupid to say that an iMac is not suitable for pro level work. I can understand if color is EXTREMELY critical but other than that it is MORE than powerful enough to do "pro" work.

I have used an iMac to do 3D renders of products before and it performed VERY well. This was a couple of years ago. I used Lightwave. I have also done MANY HUGE design jobs on the same iMac without a hitch.

I plan on using my new iMac for 3D work, hardcore CS3 work as well as Audio (LogicPro stuff).

This iMac will be my home computer that I do all of my freelance work on. I have a MacPro at the office.

I can't WAIT to get the new machine and have ZERO worries about the glossy screen! BTW, I ordered the 24" with 4 GB ram and 500HDD.

I think that a lot of so called "pros" just like to feel like a bigshot and have the tower to make them feel like what they do justifies needing the extra expansion room/power/ram LOL! I do understand having a MacPro over an iMac. Don't get me wrong. That is why I have a MacPro at the office but if I had to go with an iMac at the office as well, I don't think it would bother me one bit! The iMacs are VERY powerful! However, if you really HAVE to have 8 gigs of ram and 2 TB of internal storage then obviously you would need to go with the MacPro.

Dang, when I first started doing 3D work and design, I had a Mac 7200 and I still earned a good living.

with further thought and research, you joined today and this is your first post. furthermore, you bought 4Gb of Ram FROM APPLE, seriously?!?!?! you paid 850$ for their RAM. You are no PRO and I profess you to be a troll at best.

Awesome purchase! I just dropped the coin on a new one myself, and for the exact same reasons (Lightwave and PS). I'm quite eager to get it up and running. That's good to hear that someone else has used Lightwave successfully on an iMac before. I went ahead and got the 500gb drive and 2.8ghz proc. I plan on buying 4gb separate, though, because I cannot justify paying $935 on that much memory. I'm hoping the glossy screen isn't a problem, because I've never used one before. But judging from ppls responses, glossy can be a problem. Here's hoping Apple thought out any wrinkles before hand.:D

I purchased the 24" imac (2.8) yesterday then I started getting second thoughts because of all the negative comments on here, but I realized when I watched Steve Jobs demo. the new ilife and iwork functions why I wanted an imac for my family.
You don't hear many people that actually have the new imacs complaining...

When I get my new imac (early next week) I will give an honest review of the new imac, but until then I need to stop reading all the negative comments from people that never tried the new imac themselves.

Again I am happy that I am getting a new imac with a new version of ilife and iworks that will be perfect for my pictures and movies (I will be considering a new HD camcorder soon- the one Steve Jobs talks about with an 8GB flash card sounds impressive for $799)- I am getting this all for less than what people paid on Monday for a 24" imac... see ya next week!

For $2500 (including tax) I am getting the 24" (2.8) imac installed with iwork 08, a new printer, a new video ipod, and the apple protection plan... I get the education discount...:apple:

(My Xbox 360 and Wii are for for games)

I am not in the design field, but my dad is, and yes, I complain about glossy screens. I am glad I bought my MBP, as I don't know how much longer Apple will be offering a matte screen as an option. I understand that consumers might like the "glossy" screen, but I thought one of the positives of an LCD over a CRT (aside from thickness) was glare.

If I want to stare at my reflection all day, I can save $2000, and buy myself a mirror. My matte screen MPB is more than shiny enough. Oh, and I think I may be slightly color blind (I have trouble with shades of green), and I still prefer matte. It isn't just colors! I don't like how I have to shell out a lot more money now, and get way more computer than I need, if I want to good (as in not Mac Mini/full featured) desktop Mac without a crappy monitor! (Again, thank goodness I got a laptop).

What self respecting pro will spend close to $3K on a Mac that can be "holistically" put into the rubbish bin rather than spend $4K on a MP that can be upgraded and discarded piecemeal?

Plus gives you the option to use dual displays.
Plus gives you the option to use RAID.
Plus gives you the option to use graphics cards of your choice.

Nevermind the fact that you get more processor juice to start with.

Whatever floats your boat, I just find it amusing why people can even put the iMac and the Mac Pro side by side in some sort of comparison. There is no comparison. I won't even pay more than $1000 for a toy computer like the iMac.

I bought it from Macmall and the ram was CHEAP! The total package was like $2800. And it isnt about being able to get a MacPro for that much, it is about space mostly. I have a nice MacPro at the office with a 23" CD so...

I just want a sleek, small computer that'll take up minimal space and provide me with PLENTY of power and the iMac does just that. I am sick of towers : )

You should buy a bigger house to accommodate a Mac Pro ;)
