I am Buying myself a 27.5" Imac and...

Hi all I am new here to the Mac Forums.

I have just placed a 27.5" Imac on Layby at JB HI-FI!

I was wondering what software/s does it come pre-installed with and if those software that are pre-installed, do they come with a CD.

Also what is the Mac's Version to Word, Excel & PowerPoint compared to PC's?

And finally I heard Mac's have Microsoft Office 2008, what is the difference ti that compared to PC's Version Microsoft Office 2007 please?

I know things like Garage Band for the Imac but what else does it come with please?

I'm assuming it will come with snow leopard version of Mac OSX (operating system like Windows 7).

As for a Mac OS X equivalent for MS Office, there is iWork, Neo and Open Office and MS Office 2008.

The difference between the MS Office versions for Windows and Mac OS is the different UI and some other ways of doing things.

Use MRoogle to find the answers to your questions though, as they have been asked before, plenty of times.

Also the iMac sub forum might be better suited for this thread, I ask a moderator to move it there.

Welcome to the club - don't let anyone convince you we're exclusive - we're relatively normal

iWork has Pages - MS Word (nowhere near as full) - does a reasonable job of reading 'docs.

Keynote is Apple's Powerpoint and does a great job

Numbers does an excellent job and has some fairly deep features, however nothing approaching Excel

Very little comes with the Mac nowadays - a couple of workhorses are Textedit and Preview that reads almost any image format file though specialises in PDF's

I guess your on the East coast?

Enjoy the ride here on Macrumors - it can get a little wild at times

BTW - you're a lucky lucky bastard - you're mates will spew when they see the iMac screen!

KEYNOTE - POWERPOINT
PAGES - MS Word
NUMBERS - EXCEL

Keynote, Pages & Numbers are part of a suite called iWork

Other software comes in iLife - iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Garageband

Text Edit is just that - a text editor that comes in very handy at times.

TextEdit is the equivalent of Windows Wordpad. It's useful in a pinch.

I've used the iWork suite with my iBook G4, but I prefer Microsoft Office. If you're looking for a free alternative, OpenOffice is a pretty nice program. It's open source, so it may get a bug here and there, and if you go from MS Office to OpenOffice and back you might get some formula errors in Excel, etc.

That being said, when I purchase my new iMac when the newer models launch later this year, I will most likely get the PC Office `07 upgrade because Microsoft currently has a deal where they will give you a free upgrade to Office `10 once it launches this fall/winter as well.

The PC upgrade also contains Microsoft Publisher, one of my favorite programs that I missed having with my iBook. Luckily, I go back and forth between my desktop PC and my iBook, so I'm not really without it.

I find it funny that Apple markets their apps like "DVD Player" and stuff as "programs" included with your purchase. I'm not sure Microsoft does the same thing, since they use Windows Media Player to play DVDs and things like that. I just chuckle a bit how they taunt it as a standalone program so you can watch a movie.
