I am guessing Apple will switch to AMD within the next 2 years.

I really have a feeling for not only Mac Laptops, but desktops will have them. AMD is really fighting with Intel to make lower powered chips, and they will perhaps run cool? Although people claim that "AMD has faster, cheaper and lower temps." I have had too many AMD Chip Computer(espcially AMD Athlon64) to tell that these are all of the elements mentioned above. An Intel Machine was cooler(temp), cheaper,and faster. If they go and make an AMD Apple computer, I may have to go to the dark side(winblows) ad go buy an intel machine. KEEP ON DOING INTEL,APPLE.

The upcoming Merom and Conroe (Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme respectively) are going to stomp all over AMD's current Athlon 64 offerings, and the upcoming AM2 socket chips from AMD aren't much of a performance increase over their current ones.

In short, Intel's finally getting competitive in the desktop arena, and they've always ruled the notebook world. There's no reason for Apple to switch away from them.

Another reason for apple to avoid switching. I have seemed to have very bad luck with HP+AMD. They love to put chips into HP, but it just doesn't work well. Also, they just are not fast. AMD numbers in GHZ are high, but it doesn't live up to the numbers, and AMD overclocks horribly.

Now there, you couldn't possibly be more wrong. AMD doesn't even LIST their GHz numbers, they list a performance rating. AMD's chips only go as high as 2.25GHz last I checked, but they perform on par with or better than Intel's Pentium 4's which are upwards of 1GHz "faster" in clock. And AMDs chips overclock fantastically.

The second half of that just isn't true!! Yes HP and Compaq's implementations of AMD platforms have often been rather pants, I agree with that. AMD numbers in GHz are *lower* than the P4 range, Intel have always run higher speeds with lower performance. The AMD chips are also highly overclockable although recently the Intel chips (even the P4) have been doing well on that front, especially the P-M platform. The fastest desktop computer chips are currently made by AMD and they've held that position for a good while now.

I don't think Apple will be switching to AMD any time soon. Intel's on a comeback now that they've finally realised the P4 processors aren't that great. Intel also have a complete solution while AMD don't really. Apple will start putting custom cooling setups into their Powermacs ala the G5 to get more power before they switch to AMD.

The CoreDuo is one of the finest CPU's on the market and the soon to be Core2Duo is going to be amazing. Intel have really shaped up and I'm delighted apple went with them, it's really paying off for Apple consumers.

Did anyone honestly suspect a 2GHz in the macbook
