OS X comes with web browser, text editor, email, preview (image/pdf reader) and the usual run of odds and ends, including iTunes. As you've noticed, you'll also get iLife, which has iPhoto (photo cataloging), iWeb (web site design), iDVD (burn video DVDs from your home movies) and iMovie (edit home movies).

Dependent on the machine, you may also get a few other odds and ends bundled - Apple have been known to throw in an occasional game or small utility with some of the 'home' machines, but I don't know what's around at the moment. You'll also get a trial version of iWork (office suite), but you'll need to buy a serial number for it if you want to keep using it past 30 days.

You get iLife 08, a remote (except for the Mac Pro), a trial version of iWork, and a trial version of Office. OS X also includes lots of apps and goodies you don't get with windows. Keep in mind there's a lot of good quality freeware available for OS X on the net. On apple.com you'll find the complete list of features and apps. A friend switched a month ago, after his pc laptop died two days before he had to give a report about his studies on Pinna Nobilis, and he was amazed, because he was up and running in a matter of minutes, thanks to the preinstalled software and could happily meet the deadline with the job finished.

New also

I am thinking of getting a new Imac and was also curious about the software. If you dont get the software pre installed, do you still get the software. I am talking about Iwork08, Logic Express, Final Cut and Aperture. I dont really need it preinstalled but wanted to make sure I would still get the software if I didnt preinstall it

I ordered iWork with my iMac and it came preinstalled but I still had to type in the code which came with the iWork CD to activate it.

Those programs are all extra. They are the pro level of what comes installed but it does come with iphoto, imovie, etc

Don't forget Dictionary! Such a great, simple app. Comes with some useful widgets as well like convertor and weather forecasts (but these are free from apple's site anyway).
