For senior seminar the one and only assignment is a term paper on a topic of our choosing. My proposal was the use of Intel chips in a Mac, including details about performance and reasons why this is happening. This would inherently include a bit of history on the G5 as well..

im not asking you to do my HW for me. just some links and whatnot to get me started. help me along

thanks! :)

understand intel products is where biggest answer is

To get the real answer why intel, well it is done to a one stop shop intel has processor for different kind of devices, other than PC, might want to see other intel chips fit apple product line.

understand why ibm failed apple there is a lot of information
i would use google.

might want to compare possible other solutions against intel and try to see why they pick intel

If you want a (non-analytical) history of Apple's computer designs, try apple-history.com .... :)

I'm sure IBM maintains a site on the history of the Power architecture.

From my standpoint of writing a paper on that topic I would focus a lot on the business end of the deal.

Performance is semi-obvious on this type of argument and quite boring (reading numbers and graphs never tells the whole story). We all know that IBM's ability to deliver more PPC chips was pretty poor. So Apple went shopping. Big changes happen mainly cause of big business. Remember to argue what chips IBM was preparing and why Apple didn't go with that.

The lesson here is to do a little research *before* choosing a topic.

Arrogance?

I have absolutely no way to support this claim, but...

Don't ever underestimate the ability of Arrogance to screw-up a good thing in the corporate world. Perhaps IBM was taking Apple for granted, and of course IBM knew that this whole Sony PS3 megadeal was in the works, so all of a sudden Apple wasn't that important a customer anymore. Maybe IBM's CEO didn't return Steve's calls fast enough, or maybe Apple got hold of a IBM memo that was negative or insulting, or maybe their kids didn't get along at daycare. The point is, at a top corporate level, customer relationship management is as much about respect and courtesy as it is about product performance and availability. Right now Apple is "the" computer company, and you would think that IBM would bend over backwards to even be associated with them. But then again, IBM doesn't exactly have a stellar track record of making the right decisions over the past 25 years.

okay. i already understand the basics of why. ive watched every apple keynote for the past 3 years. i lurk on mac message boards. visit the rumour sites. i have the basic grasp. i could write the paper with my knowledge and sources as-is...

im just asking if anyone has seen any articles pertaining specifically to this subject. thats all really. a thousand sets of eyes is better than one.

thanks again.
