This is what my Disk Utility displays:

Capacity : 74.4 GB (79,892,106,240 Bytes)
Format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Available : 19.4 GB (20,811,259,904 Bytes)
Owners Enabled : Yes Used : 55.0 GB (59,080,843,264 Bytes)
Number of Folders : 101,402
Number of Files : 403,627

If I add up my Home folder I end up with 41.82GB... That includes all the pictures, music, videos, doc's, ect, ect

So 55 - 41.82 = 13.18GB... where would they be?

There's lots of stuff not in your Home folder. How about Applications? System?

Mother of god! Something very wrong just happened!... I got the beach ball while trying to download omnidisksweeper, so I forced quit and when opened Safaru again I had lost all my bookmarks. I did a restart and and to my horror I lost all my settings!! Not only safari! ALL. All my passwords and stuff.
This is the first time in 5 years with OSX that something like that happens. O well...

Yes...

The good news: All your data is still there...

You need to rename the new "yourshortname" Home folder to something else... then find the old one, thet you renamed, in /Users/ and rename that back to the original, then reboot... (there might be other, better and more detailed tip about this process if you search the forums a bit for "rename home folder" or something (edit: or just follow the link provided by WildCowboy below)... ;)).

But you do have backup of all important data, like you should, right...?

Ok, Thanks for the tips! I found the "new" user name with all the stuff at "Macintosh HD > Users . Also found the lost 10GB! they where at the "Backups" folder as incremental backups.

Now I'll see how to return everything to its place.

Thanks again

Pablo

You shouldn't run your computer on an admin account. If you weren't using an admin account, you wouldn't be able to rename your account, thus eliminating both this and a ton of other problems. :)

I see your point, but do you really think that no one should run under an admin account? Surely that cannot be the case.
