I've shut it down and hit the restart button but the screen never reboots

Can you clarify what you're talking about because nobody has a clue what you're talking about.

I downloaded an update. At the end of the download the message on the screen said that I need to 'restart' my computer. I hit the 'restart' and the cumputer shut down and when it tryed to restart, nothing happened. All I get is an Apple Logo on a Screen -- no "wheel" or anything to indicate that it is starting up.

How do I get my computer to restart?

If you've had this symptom for more than an hour or so, then you'll need to perform a manual off/on. Hold down the power button on the iMac for three to four seconds; this should shut your system down, and the Apple logo will disappear. Let go of the power button, wait a couple of seconds, and press the power button again; this will turn it back on.

See if it starts up completely. If not, let us know, or call Apple if you're still within the warranty period or have AppleCare.
