BossPaper - BigBoss Upcoming Wallpaper App

bosspapericon.png

I have been working on a new FREE app called “BossPaper”. This is a very configurable advanced wallpaper app that lets you control what wallpaper shows up on your SpringBoard. You may be saying, “But Winterboard does that!” Sort of, but not like this. BossPaper can work with Winterboard (or without). Read on for details.

Last year, Saurik released Winterboard. This enabled some new features none of us have ever seen before such as rotating desktop wallpapers via Javascript HTML pages. While this was revolutionary for us iPhone owners, it also came at a cost. Performance running these themes sucks. There are a few ways the Javascript based images can be implemented and all of them have problems. If you load them all into memory, Springboard uses a signficant amount of memory. If you fade them, Springboard uses a lot of CPU. Javascript is very memory / CPU heavy. In addition, the Javascript runs behind all applications and while applications run. This impacts performance heavily and causes apps to lag even while you’re using them and not on SpringBoard. In addition, the script continues to run even while the iPhone is locked draining battery.

I have had it on my list to solve this for a while. The result is BossPaper. BossPaper is an advanced wallpaper manager that puts total control of wallpapers into your hands. BossPaper has these features:

* You control which images are displayed. You can use camera roll, installed themes, or a combination of! With Winterboard, you could only install a theme and use what came with it. Now you can use images from many themes or other sources such as BossPaper packs.
* You can use your own images from the camera!
* BossPaper stops rotating images as soon as an app launches. This prevents battery and CPU drain.
* BossPaper stops rotating images as soon as the iPhone is locked. This prevents battery drain.
* BossPaper uses very little memory and CPU! It does not inject into apps only SpringBoard so you should not notice any application lag running it.
* BossPaper can use one of many transitions such as fade, water drop, page curl - you configure which one(s) you want. Configure how long the transitions last.
* BossPaper lets you control when to rotate images. You can rotate it on a timer you configure or you can rotate when an app closes, or both!
* BossPaper lets you hide icon labels so those that do not want to install Winterboard can use it without.
* BossPaper lets you dim the wallpaper.

Here are some screenshots of the “in progress” configuration app:

I plan to release a beta of this app in the next couple days in Cydia. Keep on the lookout.

Awesome. I have held off on installing Winterboard this JB, and this is makes me miss it (but not the lag) a little less.

quick question

where is the green telephone icon located
I want to ssh change it

anyone know when this going to be released?

Bosspaper is out in cydia under bigboss beta repo

BigBoss recently released a new source in Cydia, bigbossbetarepo. The source will contain beta/alpha/test applications. This is not a repo that everyone will want to install. If you install the source, you need to be willing to test applications and give feedback about there performance. Because the apps released in this repository are test and beta, they do have the possibility of crashing your iPhone or iPod Touch (thus, requiring a restore).

If you decide to install bigbossbetarepo, you will need to also install Openssh (and be comfortable with ssh’ing) and logmailer (which allows you to inform developers of issues with their applications).

BigBoss does say that applications released in the bigbossbetarepo repo will eventually make their way to the main BigBoss source. So, if you do not want to beta test application and take the risk that it might include, just hold out until they are released in the main source.

I cant for the life of me get the app to show up. I had the previous beta version, but the app icon wasnt there then either. I uninstalled it, reinstalled the 1.0 version, and still there is no app icon. Any ideas?

well it's awesome and it's changed my battery life dramatically. I can now go days before having to charge. + no slow down at all. geez winterboard was really sucky.

I just tried this. Very nice and certainly makes the phone more interesting.

Thank you for making this.

Pretty neat, wish we could use the sub folders under the camera roll though for individual pictures :(

Also, wish it can run in the lock screen, but I guess that is asking too much lol

give him time

I think both those issues will be addressed. in time this might replace winterboard. been running it on mine for about 2 weeks. battery life is great I will be trowing the boss a few bucks for his work I think that is the fair thing to do! :D

I should correct in saying that I don't think Bosspaper will do everything winterboard does just that it will be nice enough to have by it's self giving us better battery life

I'd say

BossPaper's UI was hard to understand for me. Is there a way to just pick ONE wallpaper? Perhaps from the wallpapers that come with the phone?

if you want that Bosspaper isn't for you. kind of pointless to use it if you only want one pic up. not trying to be mean but the whole point of it is that it changes your wallpaper

I want an app that will let me change my wallpapers (rotate between a bunch/few). But i dont want to change my dock or icons. Or if i do it would only be a few icons. I like most of the original icons, thats why i usually dont bother with themes. But if its possible to only change a few that would be great. Is this app right for me?

This sounds like it could be really awesome. I finally managed to figure out rotating wallpapers on my Bold a few months before I got my 3GS and really liked that aspect of customization. I can't wait to try this out!

wonder what the battery drain is going to be on this..

and how do you change your icon text to white when using this app. if you set a wallpaper in winterboard all your icon text goes white, when using bosspaper it goes grey-tone making it hard to read slightly
